According to Argentine Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski, Vietnamese goods have many advantages to 'conquer' the South American market from the 'gateway' of Argentina.

Bilateral import and export activities are bustling.

Despite difficulties caused by the global economic situation, Vietnam-Argentina trade cooperation is noted to continue to develop and achieve positive results.

Speaking to reporters of the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Argentine Ambassador to Vietnam - Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski - emphasized that 2024 is a good year for economic, trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Argentina, in which bilateral trade turnover reached 4.1 billion USD. In early 2025, the two sides continued to witness bustling import and export activities.

Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski said that Argentina is the main country providing input materials for Vietnamese industries such as food, garment, and footwear. " Argentina is having a trade surplus with Vietnam, which is benefiting the economies of both sides, in which Argentina has contributed to the production of goods that Vietnam then re-exports, " said Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski.

According to the Argentine Embassy in Vietnam, 80% of Argentina's exports to Vietnam serve the food industry such as animal feed, including corn, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, dairy products, beef, etc. Argentina also exports high-tech industrial products to Vietnam, including animal vaccines and biotech pharmaceuticals, contributing to maintaining quality standards for animal and human health as required by Vietnamese law.

In the ASEAN region, Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski assessed that Vietnam is a potential market for Argentine goods due to its population size, as well as Vietnam's economy having a sustainable growth rate, and people's purchasing capacity continues to improve.

Therefore, in the coming time, Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski said, Argentina will promote efforts to diversify its exports to Vietnam. In particular, Argentina will step up trade promotion activities, organize events to enhance understanding of the country as well as Argentine goods for the Vietnamese market, such as the upcoming celebration of World Malbec Day (April 17) in Vietnam by the Argentine Embassy.

In the context of global trade tensions, Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski also expects Vietnam and Argentina to strengthen cooperation and exchanges to avoid negative impacts on bilateral trade activities.

Vietnam has many advantages in exporting to South America.

On the other hand, according to Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski, although there are no specific statistics on Vietnam's exports to Argentina in the first months of 2025, according to the Argentine Embassy, Vietnam's exports to Argentina are gradually diversifying and increasing. Accordingly, Vietnam exports many types of products to Argentina, including mobile phones, computers, electrical products, footwear, textiles, clothing, iron, steel and other products.

Assessing the opportunities for Vietnamese goods to be exported to Argentina as well as to access the South American market in the coming time, Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski said that Vietnam is emerging as a competitive country in exporting goods. Therefore, Vietnam has many advantages to export goods to Argentina, thereby expanding opportunities to access the potential South American market.

Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski pointed out that Vietnam's industry is known and highly appreciated by many Latin American countries. "In 2024, an Argentinean enterprise came to Vietnam to import fiber optic cables, which is an important signal when Latin American countries mainly import goods from China, " said Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski.

However, in order to promote the export of goods to the South American market appropriately and reap more positive results, according to Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski, Vietnamese enterprises need to clearly understand the characteristics and needs of this market. In addition, it is necessary to focus on improving logistics services to facilitate the export of goods.

Referring to the motivation to exploit the South American market for export goods, Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski said that Argentina has always strongly supported and actively promoted the negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the MERCOSUR bloc (including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia). Accordingly, reaching an agreement is considered an important step in enhancing bilateral trade and opening up new opportunities for both economies.

According to Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski, Argentina is holding the interim presidency of MERCOSUR in the first half of 2025. Recently, in Buenos Aires, a foreign meeting of the Mercosur bloc took place to discuss the conclusion of the negotiations of the MERCOSUR - EU FTA and the MERCOSUR FTA with the United Arab Emirates.

After concluding the negotiations of the MERCOSUR - EU FTA and the MERCOSUR FTA with the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Marcos Antonio Bednarski said that he would consider negotiating FTAs of the MERCOSUR bloc with other countries, including Vietnam. However, " to sign the FTA between Vietnam and MERCOSUR, it is necessary to have the consensus of the parties. And this process takes a lot of time. Hopefully, we can start negotiating the FTA between Vietnam and MERCOSUR as soon as possible" - said Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski.

According to the Argentine Statistical Institute, in January 2025, trade turnover between Vietnam and Argentina reached 331 million USD, recording a strong growth of 73.2% over the same period in 2024. Of which, Argentina's exports to Vietnam reached 207 million USD, up 38.1% over the same period in 2024, accounting for 42.9% of the total export value to ASEAN and 3.5% of the export value to the world. Argentina's import turnover from Vietnam reached 124 million USD, up 206.2%, accounting for 32.8% of total imports from ASEAN and 2.2% of total imports to the world.
