"Hub" to release energy sources to the national grid

Located in the heart of the Central region, Quang Tri has extremely harsh weather, but this is a favorable condition for the locality to develop the renewable energy industry. Information from the Department of Industry and Trade said that currently, in the province, there are 20 onshore wind power projects with a total capacity of 742.2 MW; 3 solar power projects with a total capacity of 119.6 MW; 11 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 167.5 MW and 112.7 MWp of rooftop solar power systems (equivalent to about 90.2 MW) have been put into commercial operation. The total capacity in commercial operation as of January 2025 is 1,119.5 MW.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Duc Tien affirmed that Quang Tri is making efforts to turn the local unfavorable conditions into favorable conditions. In addition to the Government's investment policy, the province has also issued its own preferential policies to support investors focusing on the renewable energy sector. Regarding the Quang Tri 500 kV Transformer Station project and the connecting line passing through the province, this is an important project for the energy development policy of Quang Tri province. Therefore, the province has directed relevant local departments and branches to actively participate in handing over the site to the investor to implement the project. At the same time, it is committed to always accompany and support the electricity sector to complete the project on schedule.

According to the Power Plan VIII in the area in the coming time, the whole province will have many other renewable energy projects that are being implemented or selecting investors. The development of renewable energy sources in recent years has not only made an important contribution to the local budget but also contributed to upgrading transport infrastructure; creating jobs for people, improving livelihoods...

However, the rapid development of renewable energy projects and the huge amount of capacity from renewable energy power plants connected to the regional grid lead to the risk of increased transmission capacity on the grid, causing overload of the regional grid system, potential transmission grid incidents, posing a challenging problem in ensuring safe and stable operation of the power system for the electricity industry.

The Quang Tri 500 kV Transformer Station and Quang Tri-Vung Ang-Da Nang connecting road project, implemented by EVNNPT and the Central Power Project Management Board (CPMB), began construction in March 2024 and is in the final stages of completion. The project has a total investment of VND 965 billion, of which the cost of site clearance compensation is more than VND 26 billion, the construction cost is more than VND 342.5 billion, the equipment cost is nearly VND 351 billion and other expenses...

The 500 kV transformer station is built in Hai Truong commune, Hai Lang district, about 2.5 km northeast of the existing 500 kV Vung Ang-Da Nang line. The station has a transmission voltage of 500 kV and 220 kV, the transformer capacity includes 2 500 kV-2x(3x300) MVA transformers installed outdoors, in the first phase, 1 transformer (3x300) MVA will be installed first.

The 500 kV line connecting the 500 kV Quang Tri transformer station is connected to and from the existing 500 kV Da Nang-Ha Tinh and Da Nang-Vung Ang lines, including branch A of about 3.1 km long and branch B of about 2.8 km long. The 220 kV line connecting the 500 kV Quang Tri transformer station is connected to and from the existing 220 kV Dong Ha-Hue line and Dong Ha-Phong Dien line, including branch A of 3.2 km long and branch B of 2.9 km long.

This is an urgent power project in the National Power Development Plan with the aim of ensuring power supply for regional loads; contributing to releasing the capacity of renewable energy sources in the region, reducing local overload on power transmission lines, and at the same time improving the stability and reliability of power supply of the system.

Up to now, the project is being actively and synchronously implemented by relevant units in all stages from site clearance, supply of equipment and materials and construction. Talking to reporters, Deputy Director of the Central Power Project Management Board Bui Cong Cuong said that currently, the compensation and site clearance work of the project has been completed by over 80% of the volume (handing over 100% of the transformer station and 31/38 locations, 22/38 column spaces of the branch line corridor).

The construction of the substation items is being implemented simultaneously and is expected to basically complete the construction part in June 2025 and complete the wire stretching work in August 2025. We are continuing to coordinate with the locality to speed up compensation, site clearance and focus on construction management to ensure energization as scheduled in the third quarter of 2025.

In fact, in recent years, many important power transmission projects have been focused on by the National Power Transmission Corporation, thereby fundamentally solving the problem of releasing renewable energy capacity to the national grid. Similarly, after being put into operation, the Quang Tri 500 kV Transformer Station project and the Quang Tri-Vung Ang-Da Nang connection road will become an important "hub" in ensuring the release of renewable energy capacity in Quang Tri province, as well as having an important meaning in the economic operation of the national power system, contributing to serving well the requirements of economic, political and cultural activities of the whole country.

The Quang Tri 500 kV Transformer Station Project and the Quang Tri-Vung Ang-Da Nang connecting road are important and urgent projects, increasing the release of renewable energy capacity in Quang Tri province in particular and other localities to transmit to the national grid with an additional capacity of about 900 MVA.

Putting the 500 kV Quang Tri Transformer Station into operation will help reduce power loss. The project will also help ensure power supply for the region in the coming period as well as play an important role in the economic operation of the national power system.
