People with diabetes have higher than normal blood sugar levels. This is because the body produces too little insulin or cannot use insulin effectively. Diabetes includes type 1 and type 2 diabetes, of which type 2 diabetes is much more common, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

Warm and/or cool compresses can help relieve pain caused by temporomandibular joint inflammation.

Diabetes causes blood vessels to narrow, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. People with diabetes can also develop nerve damage, also known as peripheral neuropathy. This damage can occur in the hands, feet, or anywhere in the peripheral nervous system.

Inflammation is another common symptom of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, fat cells release more cytokines, which contribute to inflammation in the body. Insulin resistance makes inflammation worse.

No part of the body is immune to the effects of inflammation. If inflammation occurs in the jaw, the patient will experience pain in the temporomandibular joint. In other words, diabetes increases the risk of developing temporomandibular joint inflammation.

Symptoms of temporomandibular joint arthritis include pain in the jaw, face, and neck. The person may not be able to open their mouth fully and may hear a clicking or grinding sound when moving the jaw. The jaw may become stiff and swollen, making chewing difficult.

Experts recommend that if you suddenly feel jaw pain of unknown cause and it lasts for a long time, you should see a doctor to check your blood sugar. Meanwhile, people with diabetes need to monitor their jaw health. If you feel anything unusual, you should see a doctor immediately for timely treatment.

If your doctor suspects you have TMJ symptoms, he or she will order an MRI scan. Treatment typically involves medication or a jaw splint if necessary.

Less severe cases of temporomandibular joint inflammation can be treated at home. Applying a warm or cool compress to the jaw for 15 to 20 minutes may help relieve pain.

People with jaw pain also need to change their eating habits. Because temporomandibular joint inflammation is associated with increased inflammation in the body of diabetic patients. Therefore, people with the disease need to reduce inflammation in the body with foods rich in anti-inflammatory substances such as fruits and vegetables.

However, one thing to note is that fruits and vegetables need to be soft. Plants become soft when they are ripe or processed. In some cases, eating hard fruits and vegetables can make jaw pain worse. If you can’t chew, the best way is to blend them, according to Medical News Today .
