From empty hands to a billion dollar fortune

Early in the morning, when the dew drops were still on the coffee leaves, Mr. Dinh Xuan Binh was already in the garden. Each steady step of the Muong man on the red basalt soil of Sadaco village, Quang Tin commune, Dak R'lap district seemed to tell his own story - a difficult but fruitful journey to start a business.

In 2007, from Thanh Son, Phu Tho, Mr. Binh brought his ambition to the Southern Central Highlands, choosing Sadaco village as his second home. In the early days, when he had no capital, he and his wife worked as hired laborers and traded cashew nuts in the area.

Starting from nothing, Mr. Binh always tries his best to work and produce, saving little by little to make a big profit.

The little money they had saved and the money they borrowed was only enough for the couple to buy five acres of land to grow cashews. With little land and unstable income, the couple both grew crops and traded cashew nuts to make ends meet. Traveling back and forth across the country, Mr. Binh became more and more aware of the hardships of farmers.

But hardship did not deter him. Saving every penny, he continued to buy more land, expanding the production area. Coffee, pepper, durian - each type of tree was tested, cared for, and then blossomed and bore fruit. Up to now, his family owns nearly 3 hectares of cultivated land, bringing in an income of more than 1 billion VND per year. The lush green pepper plants, rows of coffee and the fragrant first durian fruits of the season are clear evidence of Mr. Binh's persistent labor.

Nearly 1,000 green pepper pillars bring a stable income to Mr. Binh's family.

He shared: “Farming is not just about planting, but also about perseverance, learning and accepting challenges. I always seek out scientific ways to care for plants, applying techniques to achieve high productivity and efficiency.”

In the past, when he first set foot in this land, Mr. Binh had nothing but empty hands and the determination to get rich. But now, looking at the endless green coffee garden and rows of pepper trees laden with fruit, everyone is amazed. Taking care of each tree and applying new farming techniques, he gradually turned 3 hectares of land into a dream source of income. In 2024, he harvested 5 tons of coffee beans, 4 tons of pepper and the first durian crop brought in more than 100 million VND. After deducting expenses, his family made a profit of more than 1 billion VND - a number that he had never thought of before. But for him, the most important thing is that every harvest season, the garden bears fruit, bringing an increasingly fulfilling life. From a simple farmer, Mr. Binh is now jokingly called by the people "billionaire farmer" - the title of those who get rich from the land.

Every harvest season, Mr. Binh's garden is busier than ever. His family creates jobs for seasonal workers with an income of 300,000 - 500,000 VND/day. Not only that, he also enthusiastically guides them in plant care techniques to improve production efficiency.

Mr. Binh's family's coffee produces an average annual yield of about 5 tons of beans.

Despite some successes, Mr. Binh has never stopped striving. Currently, he is continuing to improve and expand the production model and experiment with more high-value crop varieties. He is aiming for organic agricultural production, minimizing the impact of chemicals, protecting the environment and improving the quality of agricultural products.

Starting from scratch, he has now built a solid career. In 2021, when the economy stabilized, he built a spacious house. In early 2025, he continued to buy a car worth billions of dong to serve his family. But for him, the most important asset is his children who are on the path of education. "I just hope that my children can study properly and have knowledge to contribute to the development of their homeland in the future," Mr. Binh shared.

Contribute to the community to build a second homeland

Not only is he a good farmer, he is also an example of responsibility to the community. Over the years, he has participated in supporting households in difficult circumstances, contributing to new rural construction movements, and sharing production experiences.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Huy, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Quang Tin Commune commented: “Mr. Binh is not only a good farmer but also a responsible person to the community. He is always willing to share his experiences and support people in developing the economy. His contributions have contributed significantly to the changes in the locality.”

Mr. Binh does not remember exactly how many community works he has participated in, but he only knows that since coming to this land, he has always kept in mind that he must do something to contribute. From Deputy Head of the Farmers' Association, Police Officer, then Deputy Village Chief and Head of the Village Security Team, each job is associated with his responsibility and dedication.

Mr. Binh exchanged and shared production experiences with fellow Phu Tho residents in Quang Tin commune.

“Wherever you live, you have to stay there. When people are happy and life is harmonious, you feel at ease,” he shared when talking about the days he spent wandering the roads in the village to encourage people to implement the Party’s policies and the State’s laws.

Over the years, thanks to the efforts of him and the security team, the security situation in the village has been stable, conflicts have been resolved right at the grassroots level, significantly reducing disputes and complaints. Villagers have gradually become accustomed to the image of Mr. Binh and the mediation team, the security team sitting for hours with families having conflicts to talk and analyze right and wrong.

Besides, he is also an active member of Phu Tho Association in Quang Tin commune. He regularly participates in activities to connect fellow countrymen, support newcomers to start businesses, and share production experiences for mutual development.

“Although we are far from home, our fellow countrymen are still close. We always encourage each other to do honest business and contribute to building an increasingly strong community,” said Mr. Binh.

Dinh Xuan Binh - a Muong native of Phu Tho, still constantly strives and makes efforts to work and produce in his second homeland.

Every year on the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day, Mr. Binh and his fellow villagers gather to review traditions and remember their roots. Although far from home, in his heart, the spirit of being a descendant of the Hung Kings is always burning. "No matter where I go or what I do, I am always proud to be a Muong from Phu Tho. My homeland is not only where I was born but also where my heart always turns to," he said emotionally.

The story of Dinh Xuan Binh is not only an individual’s journey to establish a career but also a testament to the will, determination and spirit of those who live far from home. With his hands and mind, he has turned his dream into reality, contributed to his new homeland and always kept his love for his homeland.

As the night falls, the lights from the houses in the village cast a warm glow. Mr. Binh prepares for a new day, a new crop. Here, he not only sows green shoots on the ground, but also sows faith and solidarity among like-minded people – people who, though far from home, still turn their hearts to their roots.
