Duy Tan University revokes dental degree

Specifically, according to the reflection of some students who just received their graduation certificates in October 2024, the Dentistry major of Duy Tan University is not accepted by hospitals to study for a practice certificate.

The reason is that the diploma states the training major as dentist. Meanwhile, according to the regulations in the medical system, currently, there is only the major of dentist, not dentistry.

This is the first graduating class of Duy Tan University's School of Medicine and Pharmacy. Duy Tan University opened the Dentistry major according to Decision No. 1675/QD-BGDDT dated April 26, 2018, major code 7720501. Although the diploma form states graduation as a dentist, the transcripts and graduation majors of the students all clearly state Dentistry.

According to the explanation of the representative of Duy Tan University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the reason why the name of the major on the graduation certificate does not match the training major that the student is studying is due to the inconsistency between the two related Decrees.

Specifically, Decree 99/2019/ND-CP dated December 30, 2019 details and guides the implementation of a number of articles of the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Higher Education, in Clause 2, Article 15 on university education degrees and certificates "for a number of specific specialized training majors in the university education system including medical doctor, dentist, traditional medicine doctor degrees and a number of other degrees according to separate regulations of the Government".

But in Decree No. 96/2023/ND-CP of the Government dated December 30, 2023: Detailing a number of articles of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, Clause 1, Article 5 on the basis of practice guidelines states that "For dentists: medical examination and treatment facilities are granted a license to operate in the form of a hospital and must have a scope of professional activities in dentistry".

According to these Decrees, Duy Tan University is a university training institution, so it must follow Decree 99/2019, so the degree must be recorded as "Doctor of Dentistry", but at medical examination and treatment facilities, according to Decree 96/2023, it requires "Doctor of Dentistry".

According to Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice President of Duy Tan University, based on student feedback, Duy Tan University has registered to work with the Ministry of Education and Training to reissue degrees in accordance with the major they were trained in, which is Dentistry.

Currently, the school is carrying out related procedures such as printing diploma templates, leather covers, accompanying appendices... These technical operations will soon be completed so that this week, students will receive a Doctor of Dentistry degree to replace the previously awarded Doctor of Dentistry degree.
