On February 29, the Korea Football Association (KFA) announced the coaching staff of the Korean national team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March. Mr. Lee Young-jin - former assistant head coach of the Vietnam national team - was selected as technical advisor to interim coach Hwang Sun-hong.
" Mr. Lee Young-jin - a member of the National Team Strengthening Committee, a person familiar with Southeast Asian football thanks to his long-term experience working with the Vietnam team - will support coach Hwang Sun-hong in the role of technical advisor ," the KFA announced.
Mr. Lee Young-jin used to be an assistant to coach Park Hang Seo at the Vietnam national team from 2017 to 2023. Mr. Lee is considered Mr. Park's "right-hand man", his number 1 professional assistant.
Lee Young-jin is a former South Korean football star. During his playing days, he played for FC Seoul, Sangmu, Oita Trinita and Anyang LG Cheetahs. Lee made 50 appearances for the South Korean national team, participating in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
In his coaching career, he led Anyang LG Cheetahs, FC Seoul, Daegu FC, Cheongju University and worked as an assistant at the Vietnam national team.
After the 2023 Asian Cup, the Korea Football Association restructured the National Team Strengthening Committee. Mr. Lee and 10 coaches and former players were selected as members, working under Chairman Chung Hae-seong - who used to lead Ho Chi Minh City Club.
This committee is responsible for searching, interviewing and recommending a list of candidates to be coaches of the Korean national teams. In addition, Mr. Chung Hae-seong, Lee Young-jin and their associates are also responsible for supervising, evaluating and providing professional advice to the national team coaching staff when necessary.
Immediately after his appointment, the KFA's National Team Strengthening Committee made its first important decision, which was to select Hwang Sun-hong as the interim coach of the Korean national team for international matches in March. The coaching staff of the Korean national team also includes assistants Kim Young-min, Cho Yong-hyung, Jung Jo-gook, Kim Il-jin and Lee Jae-hong.
The Korean team will play two matches against Thailand in March. The first leg will be played at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on March 21. The return leg will be held at Rajamangala five days later. South Korea currently tops Group C with six points. Thailand and China are behind with three points each. Singapore has yet to win a point.
