After announcing the interim coach of the Korean national team, Mr. Chung Hae-seong - Chairman of the Korean National Team Enhancement Committee (former coach of Ho Chi Minh City) explained the reason for choosing Mr. Hwang Sun-hong.

" The Korea Football Association has decided to appoint coach Hwang Sun-hong as the national team coach for two matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The committee judged that a K.League coach would not be suitable to lead only two matches. During the evaluation process, we narrowed down the number of candidates to three ," said Chung Hae-seong.

" The top priority is Hwang Sun-hong. Based on the second meeting, we proposed Mr. Hwang's case to the federation on February 25. He said he needed more time to think about it. Then, Mr. Hwang accepted the proposal yesterday ."

Mr. Hwang Sun-hong was chosen as the head coach of Korea instead of Mr. Park Hang Seo.

Mr. Hwang Sun-hong was chosen as the head coach of Korea instead of Mr. Park Hang Seo.

Former coach of Ho Chi Minh City said Mr. Hwang proved his ability when he won the Gold Medal at the ASIAD in Hangzhou (China) and has a lot of international experience.

Mr. Hwang has a good understanding of Asian football. In addition, the committee considered whether Mr. Hwang's leadership of the national team in the World Cup qualifiers would affect the U23 team's Asian U23 finals.

Previously, the National Team Enhancement Committee finalized three candidates: Mr. Hwang Sun-hong (Coach of U23 Korea), Coach Park Hang Seo (former coach of the Vietnam national team) and Hong Myung-bo (Coach of Ulsan Hyundai).

Chung Hae-seong said he would take responsibility for the election of the interim coach of the Korean national team. He said: " I thought a lot. I conveyed my concerns to Mr. Hwang. In the end, he accepted. I will not blame anyone. As the chairman of the committee, I will take responsibility ."

Coach Hwang Sun-hong is a former South Korean national team player. During his playing days, he played for many famous teams in Japan and South Korea and also played for the reserve team of Bayer Leverkusen (Germany).

For the South Korean national team, he played 103 matches and scored 50 goals. Hwang Sun-hong played in three consecutive World Cups, from 1994 to 2002. At the 2002 World Cup, he won the Bronze Boot.

After retiring, Mr. Hwang led Busan IPark, Pohang Steelers, FC Seoul, Yanbian Funde, Daejeon Hana Citizen and the Korean U23 team.

The Korean team will appoint an official coach next May.
