Saving a patient with a 5 meter long iron bar piercing his chest

Doctors at Quang Nam General Hospital have just saved the life of a patient who was stabbed in the right chest by a 5-meter-long iron bar, because the patient did not have time to react when the iron-carrying truck in front suddenly braked.


On the afternoon of January 15, Dr. Le Nhat Nam, a specialist in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery (Quang Nam General Hospital), said that doctors had just performed timely surgery to save the life of a patient with a complex wound in the right chest area due to being pierced by an iron bar.

The patient is now out of danger and is being monitored and treated at the hospital.

After the surgery, Mr. H. has overcome the critical stage and his health is gradually stabilizing.

Previously, at 3:30 p.m. on January 14, the Emergency Department (Quang Nam General Hospital) received patient NVH (48 years old, in Tam Tien commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam) who was transferred by his family in a state of being stabbed in the right chest by an iron bar, with severe pain and difficulty breathing.

Relatives said that Mr. H. was riding a motorbike on the road, following a motorbike carrying iron. Suddenly, the motorbike carrying iron stopped suddenly. Mr. H. did not have time to brake and was stabbed through the right side of his chest by an iron bar.

Through examination and emergency tests, doctors determined that the patient had a 5-meter long, 5-cm diameter round iron bar that penetrated the chest 10 cm, causing posterior fractures of the 2nd and 4th ribs on the right, anterior fractures of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ribs on the right, and lateral fractures of the 3rd rib on the right.

In addition, the wound also caused multiple contusions of the right upper lobe of the lung; hematoma, right pneumothorax; right subcutaneous emphysema... The patient was taken to the Anesthesia - Resuscitation Department for surgery.

Doctor Le Nhat Nam said that the 1 hour and 30 minute surgery successfully connected the injury, restored the right chest wall, minimally drained the pleural cavity, and saved the patient's life.
