People's Artist Bui Bai Binh was born in 1956 and graduated from the second class of the Actors' Class of the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema. In 1977, he worked at the Vietnam Feature Film Studio and immediately received his first work from director Pham Van Khoa.

Stay young through acting
People's Artist Bui Bai Binh shared with Tien Phong many memories about the role of Mr. Toai, after the series Gia dinh minh vui bat thuc luat on prime time just ended. After Loi nho vao doi in 2022, he returned with a long-term television project.
The character of Mr. Toai in My Family Suddenly Happy did not have much screen time, but People's Artist Bui Bai Binh still successfully left an impression on the audience.
"When the film was about to air, I said this role was like a game. The old couple in the film were both the background and the balance between the children. I like the character of Mr. Toai. It's true that this role in the script doesn't have much space, and seems dry and difficult to portray. But during the process of making the film, I researched which parts were happy and which parts were sad to create highlights," the artist shared.
He said he really liked the character of Mr. Toai because he had many nuances and materials to exploit. In Mr. Toai, beyond the strict appearance of a retired military officer is a tolerant heart towards family and society. Mr. Toai is sometimes the main character, sometimes a supporting character.
People's Artist Bui Bai Binh gave many compliments to the young crew from director, screenwriter to actors of My family is suddenly happy. He recognized the creativity and enthusiasm of the young artists.
Many people think that People's Artist Bui Bai Binh and People's Artist Lan Huong (playing Mrs. Cuc) are "old trees" with a lot of experience, so they often guide the young actors in the film crew. However, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh revealed that he and People's Artist Lan Huong did not give much advice.
"Even in scenes where young people wanted me to act this way or that way to suit, I listened. I acted with Doan Quoc Dam in a few films and found him to be a very hard-working person, working hard for his role. Thanh Son is gallant and a playboy but responsible for his profession. My three sons in the film are all adorable," said People's Artist Bui Bai Binh.
He has memories of the times when filming ended early and the "father and son" would go out drinking together. He jokingly said that filming this movie "wasted a lot of beer".
With his familiar co-star, People's Artist Lan Huong, he did not make too many comments. Because the two knew each other very well, having acted together in 4-5 films, both television and cinema. In the last episode, the character of Mr. Toai had a scene where he kissed his wife on the cheek. People's Artist Bui Bai Binh said that it was a light, happy scene, with nothing awkward even though the two actors were both grandparents.
Never thought about retirement
After My Family Is Suddenly Happy , People's Artist Bui Bai Binh continued to act in the primetime TV series The War Without Borders, filmed in Lai Chau. He is confident that he is in good health and can still drink well at over 60 years old.
"I know many people of my age have retired. But I haven't thought about it yet. This profession is hard to predict. Some years I'm busy with many roles, some years I have nothing to do. Filmmaking is hard, so you have to have passion to keep going. The income is not much, but in return you get to meet friends. Work and passion take you away. If you're at home and have free time, you might end up drinking beer and wine, which is bad for your health and a waste of money," said People's Artist Bui Bai Binh.
The artist chatted with Tien Phong reporter at a coffee shop on Doan Tran Nghiep street (Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi). Previously, he and his wife - Meritorious Artist Ngoc Thu - were also the owners of a famous coffee shop on this street. The couple performed and sold coffee for a decade.
People's Artist Bui Bai Binh and his wife are the same age, met each other when they were students of the second class of the School of Theater and Cinema (now Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema). The couple decided to get married in 1981.
People's Artist Bui Bai Binh has two sons. The eldest son works at a bank, the second son graduated with a degree in directing. He is happy and proud that his son is following in his parents' footsteps.
Compared to her husband, Ngoc Thu's wife has rarely appeared on television in recent years. However, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh affirmed that he respects and supports his wife's dedication to art.
"People often say that behind a successful man is a silent woman, who stays behind to sacrifice for the family. But my wife and I don't care who goes to work and who stays at home. In previous years, my wife accepted many roles and often filmed far away.
I stay home to cook for my children. We are both old, so when we have something to talk about, we chat animatedly, and when we don't have anything to talk about, we go into that room. Like Mr. Toai's line in the movie, we are almost at the age where we can't be angry with each other anymore," People's Artist Bui Bai Binh said.
In addition to his passion for art, he often spends time going out to meet friends or taking care of plants at home. At this age, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh said that he no longer places great importance on income from acting.
