China Thanks to his lively Physics lectures, 82-year-old Wang Guangjie from Jining city has attracted more than 1.1 million followers on the popular social network Douyin.

With just a desk, a blackboard and a mobile phone, Mr. Wang's live streams every night at 7:30 p.m. always attract thousands of viewers. They are partly curious about the old teacher, partly attracted by the useful electrical knowledge he brings.

During an hour and a half, he lectured on general knowledge of physics, electronics and analyzed them in detail with practice exercises he compiled.

"As someone working in the electrical industry, the knowledge you teach is very useful to me. Moreover, your teaching is very intuitive and easy to understand, rarely can an older teacher do that," commented one viewer.

At 82, Mr. Wang said he yearns to bring knowledge to everyone. His usual routine every morning is to prepare his lectures, then wait for the live broadcast.

"I will use all my strength and enthusiasm to impart knowledge, helping more people love electrical engineering," he said.

Mr. Wang studied at the Military College, majoring in Physics and Electromechanics for 6 years. In 1974, he returned to Jining and became a physics teacher. In 1993, a year after his retirement, Mr. Wang still could not get used to the leisurely life, so he decided to continue teaching at another school. It was not until 2016, at the age of 75, that he left the lecture hall.

In 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in China, Mr. Wang was exposed to popular photo and video sharing platforms online. Seeing his wife and friends watching entertainment, food, and farming videos on Douyin, he saw a way to continue his passion for teaching.

He cleaned up the corner of the balcony, set up a blackboard, bought some chalk, and searched the cupboard for old books on electromechanics. Last March, he went live for the first time, sharing his knowledge about basic laws, electric current, resistance, etc. All stages of video production, from filming to editing, were self-taught and done by him.

Mr. Wang added that in his time, the knowledge learned about electricity was very basic, but now, the field of electricity requires a very high level of knowledge, and students must have a broad understanding of many aspects. Therefore, he searched for the latest books and researched on his own to find a suitable teaching method.

From the beginning of his livestream, Mr. Wang set three goals: to help viewers understand, apply, and keep up with the trends of the times. He believes that by seriously pursuing these three goals, people know him widely.

Last year, he was honored at the 2022 Outstanding Chinese Figures Awards Ceremony. In addition, he was selected as one of the outstanding citizens with contributions to cyberspace in Shandong Province.

Mr. Wang Guangjie recognized that the demands of society are getting higher and higher, so continuous learning and knowledge improvement are very important. Therefore, he is always ready to learn and absorb new things. He spends time studying other teachers' teaching videos, and actively goes to the factory to study the operation of electric motors.

"Doing what I like is extremely happy. As long as I like it, no matter how old I am, I will never feel tired," Mr. Wang confided.
