Within the framework of the 2024 Communication Training Program on Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence organized by UN Women from June 12-14 in Quang Ninh, the delegates attended a training session on the role of AI in journalism and communication with rich information sharing from Director of TUVA Communication (a digital technology application communication company accompanying social development projects) Dinh Tran Tuan Linh.

The training session on the role of AI in journalism helped delegates have a more practical view of the AI "colleague" in current journalism work; clearly seeing what this "colleague" has been, is and will be able to do in the current journalism production process.

Through the discussion, the delegates breathed a sigh of relief that AI is unlikely to replace journalists and will likely become a "companion" for journalists to create better journalism. In addition, technology activists always put people first in the process of developing AI technology, minimizing the scenario of AI products "stealing jobs" from the workforce.

Mr. Dinh Tran Tuan Linh shared that AI is now capable of supporting the production of a large number of press articles in a very short time based on input such as keywords, the ability to scan the day's hot issues in different fields. However, AI still faces some difficulties in important stages such as editing, professional ethics (copyright or press standards).

At the training session, delegates were able to directly use AI applications to produce news articles. By simply entering simple keywords such as the names of famous singers, actors, social issues that emerged during the day... in just about 3 minutes, the "AI journalists" produced dozens of completely different journalistic works, which surprised the delegates.

In the field of gender equality communication, AI also has remarkable "capabilities". At the discussion, Mr. Dinh Tran Tuan Linh shared an AI technology application that can be seen as a scale for measuring gender sensitivity in journalistic works. With a "memory" programmed with gender equality standards set by UN Women, this application can score any journalistic work and provide detailed arguments for that score.

Through simple steps, participants can learn the gender sensitivity score of their gender-related journalism, based on UN Women’s reliability criteria. This will clearly be a useful tool for journalists working on gender issues, helping them to be more confident about the topics they cover related to gender issues.

It is clear that AI technology is penetrating every corner of journalism activities. Mastering AI technology for each reporter and media officer is necessary to move towards a professional, modern and humane journalism.
