No entrance exam, how do schools recruit students?
According to Circular 30 on the regulations for admission to secondary and high schools issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, secondary schools must consider admission to grade 6 and are not allowed to organize exams, even for high-quality schools. Admission criteria are guided by the Department of Education and Training of each province and city.
According to the Hanoi People's Committee's primary enrollment plan, for secondary schools enrolling students in grade 6 without a route (schools recognized by the Hanoi People's Committee as high-quality schools; private schools), if the number of registered students exceeds the quota, the admission method can be implemented based on criteria using learning results, primary school training results or student capacity assessment results in the following forms: question-answer, writing, presentation...
In the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi will enroll about 161,000 students in grade 6. Notably, districts, towns and cities will regulate the form of student capacity assessment (if any). High-quality secondary schools, if recruiting based on criteria using capacity assessment results, must choose a reasonable time, report to the Department of Education and Training to submit to the People's Committee of the district, town and city for approval, and complete enrollment no later than July 12.
Private schools enroll students immediately after the end of the school year; starting from May 31 to July 12. Schools update the list of admitted students in the electronic grade book software no later than July 23.
