During exam days, it is easy to see many parents doing many things for their children. Is it true that young people have lost all their "resistance" and have to rely completely on their parents? Is this the result of spoiling their children too much?

Mother brought uniform to school to find her child

At 6:45 a.m. on June 27, during the first exam session of the 2024 high school graduation exam, a mother rushed to a testing site in Ho Chi Minh City, frantically looking for her child.

She held a bag of school uniforms in her hand and said: "This morning my child woke up late for the exam and didn't wear his uniform to the exam. I don't know if he'll be allowed into the exam room..."

Seeing the parents' worries, a teacher reassured her: "The Ministry of Education and Training currently does not have any detailed instructions on what candidates should wear when taking the high school graduation exam. Candidates are free to choose the outfit that they feel most comfortable in. You are about to enter the exam room, so don't worry!"

Hearing that, her face relaxed a bit and she turned to sit under a tree near the school gate and waited for her child.

During the math exam that afternoon, at another exam site in Phu Nhuan District (HCMC), a female candidate had just gotten out of the car and ran into the exam room, covering her face, despite her parents calling after her to give her something.

Talking to us, the female student said that a few weeks ago, her parents had made a plan, discussed who would take time off from work, who would be in charge of picking up and dropping off her friend during the graduation exam days. "Although I told them many times that I could go by myself, my parents still refused to listen. My mother even took time off from work yesterday to take care of everything, to prepare the best for me to focus on the exam," the female student shared.

Choosing a major, applying for admission... all depend on parents

At the end of each university admission season in recent years, there have been many recorded awkward situations, such as registering for one school but getting into another, or having a higher test score than the standard score but failing the very school you registered for...

In many unbelievable but true stories such as being admitted to an unwanted major, or even passing and failing, we cannot help but mention the role of the candidates themselves, the ones who are considered "mature".

During the admissions and career counseling days organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper every year, especially the admissions counseling days, the number of parents attending and asking questions to experts is sometimes even greater than the number of candidates.

Many parents show great concern and invest a lot of time and effort to accompany their children throughout the exam and university admission season.

While nowadays, finding information about admissions and exam regulations only takes a few mouse clicks, it is quite common for candidates to not know how to register for admission and have to ask teachers and parents to do it for them.

In fact, there have been many candidates who, because of asking others to do it for them, ended up getting into schools and majors they did not want.

Don't let young people lose all their 'resistance'

Normally, right after the list of successful candidates is announced, the university websites and fanpages have full information on admission instructions. It takes about 10 minutes to read this information so that candidates can clearly understand what to prepare after being admitted and confidently enter the lecture hall.

Some schools are even worried that candidates lack information, so they post articles with elaborate graphics giving detailed instructions on how to prepare and arrange documents...

According to the school, this method is to "avoid the situation where candidates see they have passed but do not know the date, time, and admission procedures" (?!). Some schools are even preparing to establish a team of volunteer students... to support new students in their admission process!

Many admissions officers of schools complain that they are miserable with candidates. All the information is available, but candidates still call, text... right on the fanpage to ask for information that the school has announced.

Admissions officers at schools said that in reality, many young people have almost lost all their "resistance", having to rely completely on their parents from choosing a major, choosing a school, to even having their parents "take action" when enrolling.

Many parents and candidates ask about the date of submitting the admission application so that... the parents can go instead. The reason given is "my child is very naive, doesn't know anything, so I'll do it quickly and feel secure" (?!).

Helping your children will make them feel safer and more comfortable... but if you overprotect them, don't you think that young people will easily fail, get discouraged, and lose their "resistance" when facing the challenging life ahead without help?
