Con Dao signs commitment to 'Plastic-reducing tourism'

On December 9, the People's Committee of Con Dao District (Ba Ria-Vung Tau) held a ceremony to sign a commitment to reduce plastic and launch the "Reducing Plastic Tourism" check-in model in Con Dao with the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam (WWF Vietnam), businesses, business establishments, and tourism services operating in the district.

Mr. Huynh Trung Son, Vice Chairman of Con Dao District People's Committee, spoke at the commitment signing ceremony.

The signing of this commitment aims to convey the message of plastic-reducing tourism and mobilize businesses and business units operating in the district to participate in environmental protection activities and protect the marine ecosystem in Con Dao. Limiting the use of disposable plastic products to attract tourists, raise awareness, change behavior and habits of reducing the use of disposable plastic products, towards saying no to plastic waste in Con Dao by 2030.

Con Dao District has many natural landscape strengths, but in recent years, Con Dao's ecosystems and resources are at risk of degradation due to the impact of economic activities and climate change.

The average amount of solid waste generated in Con Dao is about 25 tons/day, while the amount of waste accumulated at Bai Nhat is more than 100 thousand tons that has not been treated. According to WWF-Vietnam, the amount of waste generated from service and tourism businesses accounts for about 41.5% of the total plastic waste generated in the whole of Con Dao.

Con Dao is the 9th locality in Vietnam to participate in the "Plastic-Free Cities" initiative initiated by WWF with a commitment to reduce 30% of lost plastic waste.

Faced with the difficulties and challenges from objective and subjective causes affecting the sustainable development of Con Dao, Mr. Huynh Trung Son, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Dao District, encouraged businesses to participate in sustainable production and business, production and business associated with environmental protection, and committed to reducing single-use plastic and non-degradable plastic bags in production and business activities.

Build a circular tourism product for Con Dao, issue a strict policy on the "no single-use plastic" environment in all tourism activities and daily activities of the islanders. Strengthen programs to collect, treat and recycle all types of waste to increase the recycling rate of solid waste; promote the classification of household waste at source, gradually reduce the use of hard-to-decompose plastic bags and disposable plastic products in daily life...
