There was an entertainment event so the Indonesian team had to…

In the two home matches in Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship), the Indonesian team used Manahan Stadium in Surakarta, which has a capacity of only 20,000 spectators, instead of the Gelora Bung Karno National Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 77,000 seats. The reason is because this stadium hosts entertainment events and needs time to maintain the grass surface.

Sân vận động quốc gia Gelora Bung Karno là sân chính của đội tuyển Indonesia, nhưng không thể được sử dụng ở AFF Cup

Gelora Bung Karno National Stadium is the home stadium of the Indonesian national team, but cannot be used in the AFF Cup.

"We are still waiting, there are several stadium options in case the team reaches the semi-finals or final of the AFF Cup 2024. But with Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, it is impossible. That is for sure. We can only continue to use Manahan Stadium, or Pakansari Stadium (in Bogor), or Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya," Mr. Arya Sinulingga said in an interview with Antara channel on December 11.

The fact that the Indonesian team will not use the main stadium Gelora Bung Karno to compete in the AFF Cup 2024 is somewhat similar to the fact that the Vietnamese team cannot use the My Dinh National Stadium to compete as before for various reasons.

The Vietnamese team is currently using Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho to play two home matches in the group stage of the 2024 AFF Cup. The most recent home match, coach Kim Sang-sik's team played at Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh against the Indian team in an international friendly (1-1 draw) in mid-October. Before that, the Vietnamese team played at My Dinh Stadium in a friendly tournament in early September.

"The Gelora Bung Karno Stadium has recently hosted many entertainment events. Recently, they also had an event here. On Christmas Day, there will be other events and they do not want to disrupt the scheduled schedule. Therefore, it is definitely impossible for the Indonesian team to play at the national stadium if they reach the semi-finals or final of the AFF Cup 2024. After the events, this stadium needs time to maintain and resurface the field," Mr. Arya Sinulingga emphasized.

The Indonesian team will only return to play at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2025 against Bahrain, after an away match against Australia, according to CNN Indonesia .

PSSI is heavily invested

According to PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir, the country’s football body has just received a support package from the government budget totaling up to 227 billion Rupiah (about 362 billion VND). This amount will be disbursed starting from January 2025 and in stages. Thereby, it will help PSSI continue to implement new programs to improve the performance of national teams, including a more promoted policy of naturalizing players with foreign origins.

The Indonesian national team will continue to promote the policy of naturalizing players thanks to large investments.

"This support package has increased from 150 billion Rupiah per year before, to 227 billion Rupiah for 2025. Honestly, this is very encouraging and is thanks to the impressive achievements of the Indonesian national team in 2024, as well as the youth teams, the women's team (just won the AFF Cup 2024)," Mr. Erick Thohir expressed.

Mr. Erick Thohir also said: "To carry out the entire process of upgrading the teams, as well as Indonesian football, PSSI needs capital from 500 to 600 billion Rupiah (nearly 1 trillion VND). Support from the government budget, partly helps us continue our project, besides the revenue from sponsoring partners. Currently, PSSI has received revenue from 25 partners with about 400 billion Rupiah (about 638 billion VND). Therefore, PSSI has enough budget to continue its current projects, improving the performance of the teams in a sustainable and long-term way".

Indonesian press also reported that PSSI will join the race to host the 2031 Asian Cup. Currently, only Indonesia has submitted an application to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with the application signed by Mr. Erick Thohir and PSSI Secretary General, Yunus Nusi, just sent to the Asian football body's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
