Should I do an enema to detoxify after Tet?

VnExpressVnExpress16/02/2024

Many people say that colon cleansing with coffee or water can help eliminate toxins accumulated due to overeating during Tet, is this true or false? (Hung, 34 years old, Ho Chi Minh City).

Reply:

The human body has a mechanism to eliminate toxins through sweating, defecation, breathing, personal hygiene, and exercise. Colon cleansing is actually a medical procedure that must be performed in a hospital by a doctor.

Colon irrigation at home is actually putting water into a section of the colon and cannot clean the entire colon as advertised. This is an unscientific method, not purifying the body as rumored. This action also causes minerals, good and bad bacteria to be flushed out, causing electrolyte imbalance. Anal irrigation leads to many complications such as mucosal damage, scratches, perforation of the colon and rectum, bacterial infection...

Some other detoxification methods such as using patches, detox drinks... are also ineffective. Or too much steaming can cause dehydration, fatigue, and even affect the metabolism and excretion functions of many organs.

To have a healthy gut, people need to drink more than two liters of water a day, eat enough fiber, whole grains, beans, fish, and fruits. Reduce sugar intake, eat enough healthy fats found in avocados, almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, fatty fish, olive oil, and coconut oil...

Limit red meat, fried foods, grease... Do not smoke or use stimulants. Avoid drinking alcohol after Tet and limit eating leftovers such as banh chung, fried spring rolls, and bamboo shoot soup.

After Tet, you should maintain exercise to sweat, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and get enough sleep to keep your body healthy.
