(MPI) - Attending and speaking at the workshop “Global semiconductor equipment supply chain: Opportunities for Vietnam's manufacturing industry”, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Duc Tam expressed optimism about the future of Vietnam's semiconductor industry, hoping that Vietnam will become a reliable partner in the global semiconductor manufacturing supply chain; emphasizing that the Ministry of Planning and Investment affirmed Vietnam's consistent commitment to creating a favorable environment for businesses, both domestic and foreign, to develop the semiconductor industry.

The workshop was organized by the National Innovation Center (NIC), the Ministry of Planning and Investment in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam and the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) on the afternoon of November 7, 2024 at NIC Hoa Lac campus. The workshop is a sideline activity within the framework of the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 - SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024 with the theme "Elevating Vietnam in the global semiconductor supply chain".

Attending the workshop were Mr. Kees Van Baar, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Vietnam; Ms. Linda Tan, President of the Southeast Asia Semiconductor Association. Also attending were representatives of ministries, departments, branches, leaders of major technology corporations in the world in the semiconductor field such as Brainport Industries, Advantest, Lam Research, Soitec...

The workshop also had the participation of all components in the semiconductor industry manufacturing ecosystem such as the Vietnam Association of Supporting Industries (VASI), manufacturing enterprises, financial and investment organizations, domestic and foreign experts and a large number of Vietnamese engineers.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Deputy Minister Nguyen Duc Tam said that Vietnam is at a very important time, preparing to enter a new era - the era of national development as affirmed by General Secretary To Lam. Vietnam focuses on promoting digital transformation, green transformation and developing science and technology, innovation to create breakthroughs in productivity, quality and increase the competitiveness of the economy.

Vietnam's socio-economic development strategy for the 2021-2030 period has identified three strategic breakthroughs in institutions, infrastructure and human resource development associated with economic restructuring and growth model innovation; promoting development based on science and technology, innovation and cultural values of Vietnamese people.

To realize the above goals, in recent years, Vietnam has proactively implemented many specific solutions to attract investment, promote the comprehensive development of the innovation ecosystem, create an environment to promote research and development, and application of science and technology; encourage and prioritize selective investment attraction, targeting high-tech projects, including the semiconductor sector.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Duc Tam emphasized that to demonstrate Vietnam's commitment to developing the semiconductor industry, the Prime Minister has issued the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy to 2030 and vision to 2050, with the expectation of making Vietnam become the leading semiconductor manufacturing and research center in the region.

Vietnam's goal is not only to participate in the global value chain, but also to build a semiconductor ecosystem, helping Vietnam become self-reliant and develop sustainably in this field. To realize this goal, the Prime Minister has also approved the Vietnam Semiconductor Human Resource Development Program with the goal of training at least 50,000 university-level or higher human resources to serve the semiconductor industry in all stages of the semiconductor industry value chain by 2030.

Vietnam has been promoting cooperation in developing the semiconductor industry with developed countries and economies in the world. Through expanding cooperation with prestigious semiconductor partners in the world, Vietnam has been implementing the motto "if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together", gradually accompanying partners and enterprises to participate in the semiconductor industry production supply chain. Vietnam has gathered the conditions to be ready to welcome cooperation opportunities with enterprises and investors from all over the world in the semiconductor industry. Vietnam's high-tech ecosystem, especially in the semiconductor field, has been growing recently with the participation of large companies in the world.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Duc Tam expressed optimism about the future of Vietnam's semiconductor industry, hoping that Vietnam will become a reliable partner in the global semiconductor manufacturing supply chain. The connections from the SemiExpo Vietnam 2024 event are the levers contributing to cooperation between the parties in the coming time. "The Ministry of Planning and Investment reaffirms Vietnam's consistent commitment to creating a favorable environment for businesses, both domestic and foreign, to develop the semiconductor industry," said the Deputy Minister.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Kees Van Baar, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Vietnam, said that the Netherlands plays an important role in the world's semiconductor industry; The value chain of the Dutch semiconductor industry is not only in the hands of large enterprises but is connected by more than 300 different enterprises, including small and medium enterprises. Dutch small and medium enterprises contribute 41% of revenue and create 59% of employment in the semiconductor industry.

Mr. Kees Van Baar added that Dutch businesses are currently interested in investing in Vietnam, including in the semiconductor industry, and believes that Vietnam will continue to have a suitable legal framework and improve infrastructure, especially energy and digital infrastructure; At the same time, he emphasized that Vietnam can fully utilize and promote its existing supporting industry to participate more deeply in this value chain; affirming that equipment manufacturing is the pillar of the Dutch semiconductor industry and the Netherlands is ready to cooperate with Vietnam to contribute to the overall development of the global semiconductor industry.

Within the framework of the Workshop, the first Discussion Session with the theme “Opportunities for Vietnam in the global semiconductor equipment supply chain” took place, attracting much attention with sharp analysis of the development trends and components participating in the global semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry and determining where Vietnam’s opportunities lie in this supply chain. Opinions emphasized that Vietnam is emerging as an important factor in the global supply chain and is making great strides.

The speakers stated that building a support ecosystem for the semiconductor industry, especially in equipment manufacturing, is extremely necessary. Connection and cooperation between domestic and foreign enterprises will be the key factor to help improve the competitiveness and sustainable development of Vietnamese enterprises when participating in this value chain.

In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the semiconductor industry plays a key role in the development of many high-tech fields. Vietnam, as one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia, is facing a great opportunity to participate more deeply in the supply chain, especially in the field of equipment manufacturing.

In the context of the booming global semiconductor industry, Vietnam is expected to become a center for supplying raw materials, components, and assemblies for the semiconductor manufacturing industry, thereby moving deeper into the value chain of the global semiconductor industry. With an abundant human resource base and competitive production costs, Vietnam is capable of exploiting these opportunities to grow strongly.

The second discussion focused on preparing human resources for the semiconductor manufacturing industry. At this session, delegates agreed that developing high-quality human resources in the semiconductor industry is a long-term process, requiring the efforts and cooperation of many stakeholders. Vietnam needs to prepare high-quality human resources, including a team of specialized engineers and skilled workers, to meet the specific requirements of this industry.

The contents exchanged and discussed at the Workshop demonstrated a strong commitment from the participating parties to continue promoting cooperation in developing the supply chain, investing in training and research, and developing high-quality human resources, aiming to turn Vietnam into an important link in the global semiconductor equipment supply chain, contributing to the overall development of the world semiconductor industry./.
