Despite having to fight congenital cerebral palsy, Nguyen Mai Anh still graduated from Law School and received a certificate of merit from the principal for her outstanding efforts in studying.

Mai Anh, 22 years old, from Phu Tho, is a student of the 44th Law course at Hanoi Law University. She has congenital spastic cerebral palsy, which limits her ability to walk and move.

Although she underwent surgery in second grade, the effects of cerebral palsy have not improved. Mai Anh has to walk slowly, with small steps, and needs someone to support her if she has to go far. Standing up and sitting down are difficult. Mai Anh also cannot bend down to pick up things because she cannot reach them, and if she tries to bend down, she falls. Her hands are not contracted, but they are weak and shake, making it difficult to hold a pen.

Growing up surrounded by gossip, haunted by curious looks and the words "are you strong or are you lame", Mai Anh became withdrawn, spending most of her time studying.

In 2019, she was admitted to Hanoi Law University with 26.75 points. In April, Mai Anh graduated early with a good overall score.

At the graduation ceremony, awarding degrees to nearly 1,600 students of the school on June 25, Mai Anh was invited to the stage by the principal and awarded a certificate of merit for "Having made outstanding efforts to excellently complete the study program".

The image of the principal leading Mai Anh onto the stage and handing her a certificate of merit has been circulating on social media for the past two days. Many people left comments expressing their admiration for the little girl’s efforts.

Mr. Nguyen Son Tung, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi Law University, said that normally only students with excellent academic achievements, awards in competitions or achievements in union and association activities will receive certificates of merit from the principal.

"In more than 12 years of teaching at the school, this is the first student who graduated with a good grade, without any outstanding achievements in group activities, to be commended by the principal," said Mr. Tung. According to Mr. Tung, although the school supported Mai Anh with dormitory accommodation or loans for her studies, the result was entirely due to her own efforts.

Mai Anh was also very surprised to receive a certificate of merit at the graduation ceremony. "I was very honored and touched by the principal's decision to award the certificate of merit," Mai Anh shared.

Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Hao, Mai Anh's mother, said that at first the student did not plan to attend the graduation ceremony because she encountered many difficulties when going to a place with too many people. However, the school called to inform that the principal would be presenting a certificate of merit, so the whole family decided to come from Phu Tho to Hanoi to support.

When her child moved onto the stage, Mrs. Hao worried that her child would have difficulty moving in the traditional dress and formal attire. When she let go of her child's hand, she could barely see anything around her, her mind was haunted by the thought of her child falling. Looking back at the image of the principal holding her child's hand that was circulating online, she was so moved that she could not hold back her tears.

"At that moment, the principal was like a father holding the hand of his daughter who was taking her first steps. I clearly saw the love and responsibility of the teacher and thanked him for that," said Ms. Hao. According to her, the principal's certificate of merit gave her daughter more motivation.

After graduating from Hanoi Law University, Mai Anh interned at a law firm in Hanoi. Every week, she still has to do therapy and study English to get an IELTS certificate. Mai Anh said she will take an additional lawyer training course at the Judicial Academy. Boys get sick more often than girls.
