45 difficult minutes of Viettel The Cong Club

On the evening of January 11, in the 1/8 round of the National Cup 2024-2025 season, the highlight match between The Cong Viettel Club and PVF-CAND took place at My Dinh Stadium. On the day when they were not allowed to use foreign players, Coach Nguyen Duc Thang's team could not create an overwhelming match against their first-class opponent. Coach Mauro Jeronimo also had a number of quality domestic players such as Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Nguyen Huy Hung, Nguyen Van Dung, Ryan Ha, Martin Lo. That's why the two teams played relatively evenly.

The most notable situation of the first half occurred in the 24th minute. Khuat Van Khang took a direct free kick from the edge of the PVF-CAND penalty area, sending the ball over the wall and towards the far corner of the goal. However, Phi Minh Long flew to block it excellently. In the opposite direction, PVF-CAND also created some dangerous opportunities but the strikers' finishing lacked sharpness.

Thanh Nhan (middle) was once called up to the Vietnam national team under coach Philippe Troussier. He had several situations that made the defense of Viettel The Cong Club struggle.

Phi Minh Long shone in the first half with an excellent save, preventing Van Khang from scoring a great goal but could not beat Duc Chien on the 11m mark.

Unexpected turn

In the second half, both The Cong Viettel Club and PVF-CAND made personnel adjustments in attack. However, neither team played outstandingly and the second half was quite boring. The turning point of the match came in the 75th minute when Tran Ngoc Son made a mistake when fouling Nham Manh Dung in a situation of fighting for a high ball in the penalty area. The referee had a favorable viewing angle and immediately awarded The Cong Viettel Club a penalty. From a distance of 11 meters, Nguyen Duc Chien fooled Phi Minh Long to open the score of the match.

Duc Chien (number 7) celebrates with his teammates

In the remaining minutes, PVF-CAND Club tried to attack to find an equalizer. However, the most notable opportunities for this team were only long-range shots by Huynh Cong Den or Nguyen Thanh Nhan. However, that was not enough to help them score a goal.

Not only were they unable to score, PVF-CAND Club also conceded another goal. In the 90+3 minute, after goalkeeper Minh Long rushed out to clear the ball from Nguyen Cong Phuong's feet, Nham Manh Dung swooped in to score an accurate rebound, sealing a 2-0 victory for The Cong Viettel Club. With this result, coach Nguyen Duc Thang and his team entered the quarterfinals and will meet the winner of the match between HAGL and Binh Phuoc Club.

In the remaining match on January 11, SLNA won 1-0 against Da Nang FC thanks to a goal by Dinh Xuan Tien. The Nghe An team will face either Ha Noi or Dong Thap FC in the quarterfinals.
