Right after the 2024 high school graduation exam, many students have started to learn some subjects in their target career, register for a foreign language course, learn additional necessary skills such as writing, presentation... to prepare for the upcoming university journey.
According to experts, carefully preparing knowledge and skills before entering a new level of education not only helps learners expand their knowledge but also improves their self-study ability.
"Gain strength" for new projects
The decision to study economics of Danh Thi Thuy Duong – a former student of Kien Giang Ethnic Boarding High School – surprised her family and friends. Because before that, she took exams in social sciences while to study economics well, you need knowledge of some natural sciences.
Knowing that she had chosen a difficult path, Thuy Duong began preparing to "gain strength" for new plans from the days she waited for her 2024 high school graduation exam results. Thuy Duong said: "I learned about university subjects in advance through books on topics related to economics. I also went online to learn English so that I could read specialized documents in English in the future."
Similarly, Ho Duc Manh – a former student of Huynh Thuc Khang High School (Quang Nam) – said that studying university subjects early helped him progress faster.
Duc Manh shared: “Since I entered high school, I have had the intention of studying technology in the future. Now, I still spend a lot of time self-studying programming on websites dedicated to programmers with C++, a basic programming language in the industry.”
“I want to become a programmer who creates both a user interface framework and a server that processes features to help solve problems that society needs,” Duc Manh said.
In the 2024 high school graduation exam, Manh took the natural science exam to have an easier time in university admission.
After the exam, Duc Manh, like many of his friends, couldn't help but worry: worried about not being able to do the test, worried about getting low scores... But more than a week later, he calmly put aside his worries because he knew he still had other opportunities to prepare for his upcoming university days.
Many things to prepare
Dr. Ha Thanh Van - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences - believes that studying university subjects in advance and learning additional skills is extremely necessary. Because it not only helps young people feel less confused when entering university but also helps them in many things in their future lives.
Therefore, you not only need to learn well the knowledge in school but also need to learn many additional skills for work such as foreign languages, information technology, teamwork skills, project planning skills, work time allocation... so that you will not be confused after graduation.
In addition, new students also need to prepare to practice hard, be diligent, integrate into the environment, and affirm their own abilities to meet job requirements when going to work.
“I always encourage young people, in addition to learning knowledge, to learn necessary life skills. Including manual labor skills, behavioral skills, communication skills, teamwork skills, and even skills such as traveling, cooking, and housework,” Dr. Ha Thanh Van emphasized.
MSc. Tran Nam – Head of Student Affairs Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University – said that before registering for a major, students should learn carefully about the university, administrative procedures, university culture, etc. so that when entering the school, they can integrate better. According to him, university is a place for students to acquire knowledge, gain life experience and demonstrate a certain level of individuality in society.
“University is a place for students to acquire knowledge, gain life experience and demonstrate a certain level of individuality in society. It is a long, arduous but interesting journey. Students need to prepare themselves mentally,” said Master Tran Nam.
Lifelong learning
Dr. Ha Thanh Van added some advice to help new students study well, emphasizing that each student needs to be aware of the importance of studying. Ms. Van believes that studying is a lifelong process and the high school graduation exam is just a fad. Young people have many things to aim for in other schools, other professions, or even go to vocational school according to their interests.
“When we are young, we have time to do many things. If the results are not good, you should not be discouraged, you should not blame yourself, because you still have many opportunities. But young people also need support and support from their families if their exams and studies are not as expected,” emphasized Dr. Ha Thanh Van.
Practice your skills… writing music
Having been admitted early to a school in the Central region through the method of considering high school results, Ho Duc Manh can spend time on some plans before entering university. Manh said he will register to participate in the 2024 Da Nang High School Robotics Competition (expanded) with his friends to try his hand.
“Recently, when I have free time, I also practice my music writing skills to compose more soulful songs. Writing music is my hobby,” Duc Manh confided.
