Tieu Pagoda still preserves valuable cultural heritages of the Ly Dynasty, is the place where King Ly Cong Uan was raised, contains many lasting cultural and historical values, preserves many valuable antiques and is associated with many historical figures such as Zen Master Van Hanh, King Ly Thai To, Zen Master Nhu Tri.
Tieu Pagoda also has the Chinese name Thien Tam Tu or Tieu Son Pagoda. According to historical records, this pagoda dates back to the Tien Le Dynasty. By the Ly Dynasty, it was one of the major Buddhist centers. The pagoda includes: Thien Tam Pagoda on Tieu Mountain, where monks practice and live, and Truong Lieu Pagoda at the foot of the mountain, where monks live.
At the foot of Tieu Son, there are relics from before the common era, for example, Vinh Kieu village is a famous village of mandarins; Hoi Quan village is home to a very typical communal house of the Le Nguyen dynasty and is also a famous weaving village; Tam Son is the only village with Tam Khoi degrees, a system of a series of feudal mandarins. Right at the foot of Tieu Pagoda, people have discovered relics of the Phung Nguyen culture of many centuries before the common era. This is also the place where the legendary Tieu Duong river flows with the legend of Truong Tri and where many stories about our history of fighting against invasion during the period of Northern domination.
According to old historical records, Tieu Pagoda was both the place where Zen Master Van Hanh practiced and preached, who inspired Ly Cong Uan when he was young to become an adult and establish the Ly Dynasty and found the capital Thang Long. This was also Ly Cong Uan's hometown.
Through the remaining ancient paintings and documents, it can be seen that the scale of the ancient Tieu Pagoda was very large, including the Cam Tuyen Institute, the Tien Linh Tower, and the Thuong Dien Palace. Over the long history, the pagoda has had to be rebuilt, restored, and embellished many times. During the Le Trung Hung period, the Tieu Pagoda was renovated and expanded on a large scale in the style of a hundred-room pagoda, so it was also called the "Hundred-room" pagoda. During the Nguyen Dynasty, under the reign of King Bao Dai, the pagoda continued to be renovated.
Up to now, the pagoda consists of the following buildings: Tam Bao, To house, guest house, bell tower and auxiliary works. Tieu Son pagoda or Thien Tam pagoda has both ancient features and innovative features through renovations. Tieu pagoda not only has a very special landscape position but is also a place where many spiritual and cultural values as well as cultural and historical traditions converge.
In particular, Tieu Pagoda still preserves 14 mossy, ancient towers of famous monks who once lived here. The tower system tells us that this was a large Buddhist center where many eminent monks came to practice.
In addition, Tieu Pagoda still preserves extremely valuable cultural and historical values such as the book "Thien Nam Ngu Luc" recording about Mrs. Pham Thi - Mother of King Ly Cong Uan; bronze statue of Zen Master Van Hanh and the tablet clearly stating "Ly Trieu Nhap Noi, Prime Minister Ly Van Hanh Zen Master Than Vi". On the top of Tieu Mountain, there is also a statue of Zen Master Ly Van Hanh about 5m high, placed facing Thang Long citadel.
Tieu Pagoda still preserves some valuable antiques of the Le Dynasty as well as reflecting the Ly Dynasty such as: 15 beautifully carved wooden Buddha statues, a stone stele named "Cung dien bi ky", a bronze bell of Truong Lieu Pagoda and many parallel sentences, poems, prophecies... Especially a stone stele named "Ly gia linh thach" recording the origin and achievements of Ly Cong Uan.
Tieu Pagoda was ranked as a historical and cultural relic in 1991. Visitors to the Tieu Pagoda relic site are looking for vivid pages of history about the childhood of King Ly Cong Uan, the enlightened king who founded the Ly Dynasty and the Dai Viet nation. Coming to Tieu Pagoda is coming to an ancient land with many mysteries associated with history and culture for many people of Bac Ninh - Kinh Bac and the Vietnamese people.
