Exactly 55 years ago, on September 2, 1969 (July 21 of the Lunar calendar), beloved President Ho Chi Minh left us for eternity. His heart stopped beating but his legacy lives on forever...

The eulogy read by the Party Central Committee at the memorial service for President Ho summarized a profound truth that touched millions of hearts: "Our nation, our people, our country gave birth to President Ho, the great national hero, and it was he who brought glory to our nation, our people, and our country."

That truth will last forever with the nation, country, Vietnamese people and the Ho Chi Minh era.

Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam

Uncle Ho's paternal home is in Sen village, Nam Dan, Nghe An. An area in Vinh, Nghe An was chosen by King Quang Trung to build Phuong Hoang Trung Do. Nguyen Tat Thanh grew up and studied in the capital Hue. Those years were extremely important for the formation of Ho Chi Minh's personality. In 1911, the young man Nguyen Tat Thanh left Nha Rong port, Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) to travel around the world, looking for a way to save the country. Thirty-four years later, on September 2, 1945, in the capital Hanoi, President Ho read the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Our country officially appeared on the world map as an independent nation.

From the historic September 2, 1945, the young Vietnam, like Phu Dong, rose up, entered the 9-year resistance war, creating the "earth-shaking" Dien Bien Phu victory. Exactly 24 years after the birth of the country, that great heart stopped beating in Hanoi. He passed away with an inconsolable sorrow, unable to visit his compatriots in the South fighting the resistance. For Uncle Ho, "The beloved South is always in my heart" and the compatriots in the South always looked towards Hanoi, where he led the revolution and nurtured his strong will.

The ideology of “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” and the motto of “Fight to drive out the Americans and overthrow the puppets” directed and led the Vietnamese people to wage a protracted resistance war, ending in victory with the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, completely liberating the South, and reuniting the country. Vietnam created the miracle of “defeating two great empires”.

Even during the fierce war, President Ho advocated “both resistance and nation building”. On September 19, 1954, at the Gieng Temple, Uncle Ho advised the cadres and soldiers of the Vanguard Army Corps before returning to take over the capital: “The Hung Kings had the merit of building the country, we, Uncle and nephew, must work together to protect the country”. Opening the Third Party Congress (1960), President Ho affirmed the two strategic tasks of the Vietnamese revolution: “…building socialism in the North and fighting for peaceful reunification of the country”. Building the North strong enough to defend itself, to be a great rear base, to support and encourage the people of the South to hope and fight.

Along with the truth “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”, he also emphasized “If the country is independent but the people do not enjoy happiness and freedom, then independence is meaningless”. These are the profound philosophies of President Ho Chi Minh on building, developing the country and protecting the Fatherland.

He left us an extremely valuable legacy - Ho Chi Minh Thought. At the 4th Congress, our Party affirmed: "Ho Chi Minh Thought is a comprehensive and profound system of viewpoints on fundamental issues of the Vietnamese revolution, the result of the creative application and development of Marxism-Leninism to the specific conditions of our country, inheriting and developing the fine traditional values of the nation, absorbing human culture".

That system of viewpoints is extremely massive, and can be summarized in the following basic contents: National independence is closely linked to socialism, combining national strength with the strength of the times; the great strength of the people, of the great national unity bloc; the mastery of the people, building a State that is truly of the people, by the people, for the people; developing the economy and culture, constantly improving the material and spiritual life of the people; building a national defense for all people, the people's armed forces; building an independent and autonomous diplomacy; Party building work; preserving revolutionary ethics and caring for future generations...

The Testament was prepared proactively and carefully down to every word in 5 years, with a very important passage - "First of all, talking about the Party". He advised: "Comrades from the Central Committee to the Party cells need to preserve the solidarity and unanimity of the Party as if preserving the pupil of their eye"; "Each Party member and cadre must truly imbue revolutionary ethics, truly be thrifty, honest, impartial and selfless. We must keep our Party truly pure, worthy of being a leader, a truly loyal servant of the people". The words "truly", "truly", "truly" were repeated many times, showing President Ho Chi Minh's special concern.

Not only was Ho Chi Minh concerned with the immediate task, he also attached great importance to the future. He wrote: “Cultivating the next generation of revolutionaries is a very important and necessary task”; “The Party must take care of educating them in revolutionary ethics, training them to become successors in building socialism who are both “red” and “expert”.

President Ho Chi Minh's entire life and career left us an invaluable asset - Ho Chi Minh's Thought, Ho Chi Minh's era. He is a shining example of unity between thought and action, words and deeds; of revolutionary ethics; very great but also very simple and close. Therefore, he has an extremely great attraction, inspiration and persuasion.

“National affairs” are important matters, but President Ho Chi Minh still paid attention to the smallest things, not leaving out anyone. Poet To Huu wrote a poem on behalf of the people and the country praising the stature, noble soul, and immense love of Ho Chi Minh, “Uncle lives like our heaven and earth. Loves every grain of rice, every flower. Freedom for every slave. Milk for the children, silk for the elderly!”

Nature has many wonderful things. The life and career of President Ho Chi Minh is an immortal circle, always associated with the typical and quintessential places of Vietnam; forever associated with the historical events of the country. He is the guiding light, the guide, the inspiration, the motivation for Vietnam to overcome all rapids, to constantly grow, to rise up to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's great powers. President Ho Chi Minh is integrated into the country's mountains and rivers, eternally with the Vietnamese people; living forever in the hearts of our nation and people.

People and times

President Ho Chi Minh is a great leader, a national hero, a typical revolutionary, a person of great influence on humanity in the 20th century and a world cultural celebrity.

On his journey to save the country, Nguyen Ai Quoc clearly pointed out the nature of colonialism, putting forth the famous argument, "capitalism is a leech with one tentacle attached to the proletariat in the mother country and another tentacle attached to the proletariat in the colonies." From there, he concluded that it was necessary to always link the proletarian revolution in the mother country with the revolution in the colonies.

His thoughts on the path of national liberation struggle, “nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”, on the great role of the people, on international solidarity…, transcend the scope of nation and ethnicity, and have the value of promoting and encouraging the national liberation movement and the movement to fight for peace, democracy, social progress, against colonialism, against war… in the world.

The cry “Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam” resounded in Cuba, the “island of freedom” and many African and Latin American countries… Russia, China, Cuba, Japan and some other countries erected statues of Ho Chi Minh. France named 7 streets in South Lyon, Brittany, Rhoone-Alpes after Ho Chi Minh…. All of this shows their admiration and great influence on him.

In his Testament, President Ho Chi Minh paid great attention to the international communist movement. He wrote, “As a person who has served the revolution all his life, the more proud I am of the growth of the international communist and workers’ movement, the more heartbroken I am about the current discord among the fraternal parties!”; “I firmly believe that the fraternal parties and fraternal countries will definitely have to unite again”, “on the basis of Marxism-Leninism and proletarian internationalism, with reason and emotion”.

With such great contributions, President Ho Chi Minh was recognized and highly appreciated by many countries. UNESCO Resolution 24C/18.65 on the 100th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth solemnly affirmed that he "left his mark on the development of humanity" and was "an outstanding symbol of national self-affirmation, dedicating his whole life to the cause of national liberation of the Vietnamese people, contributing to the common struggle of peoples for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress".

President Ho Chi Minh is one of those special cases in history, “becoming a legend while still alive” and as time goes by, his vitality and ideological values still shine, becoming a future cultural symbol of humanity. As the Soviet poet Osip Mandelstam said one hundred and one years ago, “From Nguyen Ai Quoc radiates a culture, not European culture, but perhaps the culture of the future.”

Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought are the guiding principles of our Party and our country; they are the foundation for the major viewpoints and orientations in the Political Platform and documents and resolutions of the Party. On the 79th anniversary of Uncle Ho reading the Declaration of Independence giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and also the 79th anniversary of his passing away to the “world of the wise”, we miss him even more. The more we miss him and are grateful, the more we must strive to “Study and follow Ho Chi Minh’s ideology, morality and style”. Thus, Uncle Ho will live forever in the hearts of the Vietnamese people and nation.
