Mr Johnson made the call after Ms Markarova last weekend hosted President Zelensky on a tour of a US ammunition manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state ahead of the US presidential election in November.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visits the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania (USA) on September 22.
Johnson said the tour was led by a “top political surrogate” for Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. “I am ordering you to immediately remove Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova,” Johnson wrote in a letter to President Zelensky obtained by Fox News Digital on September 25.
“As he said, the Ukrainians were trying to avoid being ‘involved in domestic US politics’ and avoid ‘influencing the American people’s choices’ ahead of the November election. That goal was clearly missed this week when Ambassador Markarova hosted an event in which he toured a US manufacturing facility,” Johnson wrote.
"The facility is located in a politically competitive battleground state, the visit was led by a top political surrogate for Kamala Harris and did not include a single Republican because no Republicans were invited," Johnson continued, calling the tour "clearly a partisan event designed to support Democrats and clear election interference."
Mr Johnson stressed that "that deliberate and short-sighted political move has caused Republicans to lose confidence in Ambassador Markarova's ability to serve as a diplomat in this country in a fair and effective manner".
Ukrainian president brings 'victory plan' to US
"She should be removed from office immediately... All foreign nations should avoid opposing or interfering in the domestic politics of the United States," Mr. Johnson wrote in a letter to Mr. Zelensky, according to Fox News.
There is currently no information about the reaction of President Zelensky or the Ukrainian Embassy in the US.
Last weekend, Mr. Zelensky visited a munitions factory in Pennsylvania with two senior Pentagon officials. Mr. Zelensky also met with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (a Democrat).
Mr. Zelensky recently criticized Republican presidential candidate, former US President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, calling Mr. Vance "too extreme," according to Fox News.
