The morning market in Wajima city, one of the three largest morning markets in Japan with hundreds of stalls, was destroyed by fire after the earthquake on the afternoon of January 1.

According to Kyodo News , the 7.6-magnitude earthquake destroyed many buildings and roads in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Continuous aftershocks caused fires in several locations in the city, hindering rescue operations. One of the buildings destroyed by the fire was the 1,000-year-old Wajima Morning Market. Wajima is known as a famous trading and cultural tourism destination in Wajima City.

A massive fire broke out in the Wajima market on the afternoon of January 1, shortly after the 4:50 p.m. earthquake. On the morning of January 2, NHK television footage showed a seven-story building tilted and smoke rising from the central area of ​​the market. Ishikawa prefectural officials said the fire had engulfed more than 200 structures in the downtown area of ​​Wajima. There were 14 reports of people trapped under the rubble in Wajima.

Before the fire, the historic Wajima Market was known for its lively atmosphere and rich variety of local goods. Wajima was more than just a market, it was a symbol of community and tradition.

According to JNTO's travel advice page, the morning market has more than 300 stalls, making it one of the three largest morning markets in Japan. The market has been in operation for more than 1,000 years. Wajima Market is often introduced to foreign visitors as a famous place to buy traditional lacquerware in the region. In addition, the market is also famous for fresh seafood and dried seafood. Wajima is located on the west coast of Japan, with relatively cold weather in winter. The market is usually open from 8am to 12pm, and is closed periodically on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

The market is currently temporarily closed to recover from the fire.
