Apple's M3 Pro chip disappoints in performance

Accordingly, the Geekbench 6 benchmark results for the new MacBook Pro models show that the M3 chip is up to 20% faster than the M2 chip, the M3 Pro is 6% faster than the M2 Pro, and the M3 Max is up to 50% faster than the M2 Max and is almost on par with the M2 Ultra chip, according to Macrumors .

Both the M2 Pro and M3 Pro feature up to 12 CPU cores, but the M3 Pro has two fewer high-performance CPU cores. So while the M3 Pro is manufactured using TSMC's improved 3nm process, compared to the M2 Pro's 5nm, the chip's performance is reduced due to this change. Apple says the M3 Pro also has 25 percent less memory bandwidth and fewer GPU cores than the M2 Pro.

Overall, the M3 series chips not only offer performance and power efficiency improvements over the M2 series chips, but also feature upgraded GPUs (graphics processing units) with hardware-accelerated ray tracing support and mesh shading (for calculating and processing polygons, in graphics processing) to improve in-game graphics rendering.

Additionally, Apple’s specs indicate that all new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models offer a peak brightness of up to 600 nits for standard/SDR content, a 20 percent increase from the 500 nit maximum on previous models. This means the laptops now have the same peak brightness as Apple’s Studio Display line.
