Teacher policy is not just about money

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên11/10/2024

The noisy proposal to exempt tuition fees for teachers' children, although teachers do not "expect anything", has been criticized by public opinion, causing many teachers to worry. Of course, they hope to have a living income, commensurate with the nature of their profession, but most of them do not demand or want special preferential policies.

Ms. Nhu Huong, a high school English teacher who recently received her retirement decision, shared that when deciding to study pedagogy, graduate and teach, and stick with the profession until retirement, pursuing a rich life is certainly not the criteria of a teacher.

In fact, although they have not yet enjoyed the "highest salary" policy, teachers' income has gradually improved. However, the "wave" of teachers quitting their jobs and changing jobs has never been as alarming as in recent years. The first reason that public opinion thinks of is salary, but many studies have shown that income is only one of the reasons why teachers decide to leave the podium. What worries them most is the invisible pressure, the pressure that is not based on expertise that is still weighing heavily. Teachers have to endure all the pressure from the state management mechanism, in teaching and learning, in relationships... The terrible indicators of achievement disease, the rate of good and excellent students, the number of students passing, the rate of student attendance...

There is also the pressure of having to struggle to "get into the payroll" and then continue to endure many unreasonable regulations to avoid falling into the 10% annual payroll reduction (according to regulations).

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet, a teaching and research expert on public policy, affirmed that teachers have the right to demand income commensurate with the nature of their profession; but if they only think about money, with such a level of training, they have more opportunities to earn money. He said that whether teachers are on the payroll or only sign contracts with teachers, there must be mechanisms to protect teachers, both in the public and private sectors. We cannot push teachers into "danger" just because of public pressure or because we want to please parents and students.

The issue of reducing unnecessary pressure on teachers has been mentioned many times, and many terms of the Minister of Education and Training have wanted to resolve it but have not succeeded. When Minister Nguyen Kim Son first took on the task of "commander of the industry", he also promised that the Ministry would have to consider adjusting and reviewing the teaching and learning content, teaching practical and practical things, reducing and eventually eliminating formalities, frivolities, and uselessness...

The Ministry of Education and Training is making efforts to explain the necessity of developing and promulgating the Law on Teachers. What society needs and what teachers expect are not small, temporary policies, but a legal document that ensures universality and longevity. When teachers have their own law, their rights and responsibilities are commensurate with their position and the characteristics of their profession; they are no longer subject to the extra-professional pressures that each locality and each school has imposed on teachers as they have been doing for a long time.
