(VTC News) - Through camera traps, the Long Song - Da Bac Protective Forest Management Board (Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province) has recorded 24 rare species of birds, animals, etc.

The Southern Institute of Ecology (under the Institute of Applied Materials Science) has just reported the results of research on bird and animal species using camera traps at the Management Board of Long Song - Da Bac Protective Forest (Tuy Phong district).

Recently, the Southern Institute of Ecology has closely coordinated with the Long Song - Da Bac Protective Forest Management Board to install 36 camera traps, which are attached to tree trunks at a height of 20 to 40cm above the ground and have recorded 24 species of birds and animals. Among them are endangered, precious and rare species such as: Black-shanked douc Pygathrix nigripes, Java pangolin Manis javanica, peacock Pavo muticus, goat Capricornis sumatraensis, pig-tailed macaque Macaca leonina, etc.

According to the Southern Institute of Ecology, among species of conservation value, the pig-tailed macaque Macaca leonina (Northern pig-tailed macaque) is the most common species, recorded 88 times at 22 camera trap sites.

Notably, this is the first time that the Capricornis sumatraensis (mainland goat) has been recorded in deciduous dipterocarp forests in Vietnam.

The Javan pangolin Manis javanica is a nocturnal mammal that digs burrows underground and feeds mainly on termites and ants.

The black-shanked douc (Pygathrix nigripes) is a leaf-eating monkey endemic to Vietnam and Cambodia. It has black legs, black arms, a long tail, and white fur. Its diet consists almost entirely of leaves, with occasional fruits and flowers.

The Gallus gallus is a red-feathered junglefowl found in many midland provinces in Vietnam. This type of chicken is often kept as an ornamental bird, crossbred with domestic and foreign chickens for cockfighting purposes, so many people hunt them for profit.

The jungle cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small wild cat native to mainland South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. Since 2002, the species has been listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List because it is widely distributed although threatened by habitat loss and hunting in some parts of its range.
