"Mauricio's experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea well and take the club forward," Chelsea said in a statement on their website. "He is a winner, having worked at the highest level in multiple competitions and in multiple languages. Mauricio's mentality, tactical approach and commitment make him stand out from the pack."

Pochettino will start work on July 1 after almost a year out of work since being sacked by PSG. He has been offered a two-year contract with the option of a further year. Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly appears to have learned from his first managerial appointment, when he signed Graham Potter on a five-year deal. Chelsea have also announced Pochettino's four assistants at Stamford Bridge: Jesus Perez, Miguel d'Agostino, Toni Jimenez and Sebastiano Pochettino.

Pochettino inherited a strong squad from his predecessor Potter. However, he still has the budget to recruit new players in the next summer transfer window. Chelsea spent 740 million USD to bring in 16 players last season but failed to fully exploit their abilities.

The Stamford Bridge team has just experienced the worst season in the history of participating in the Premier League, finishing only 12th with 44 points after 38 matches. Chelsea also scored a record few goals with a total of 38 goals.

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Jose E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss said: "The team have worked hard and thoughtfully, and the board is proud. We are delighted that Mauricio is joining Chelsea. He is a world-class manager with an outstanding record of achievement. We look forward to his introduction."

Pochettino had success when leading Southampton and Tottenham in the Premier League. Although he could not help the "Roosters" quench their thirst for titles, he took them to the 2018-2019 Champions League final before losing to Liverpool. The 51-year-old coach also took Tottenham to the 2014-2015 League Cup final and finished second in the 2016-2017 Premier League. Both times, he lost to Chelsea.

During his 18 months at PSG, Pochettino won the 2021-2022 Ligue 1 title and the French Cup a year earlier. However, failure in the Champions League cost him his job. With a year left on his contract, Pochettino was compensated by PSG with about $17 million.
