Spend money on legitimate needs
Before achieving success and building a house for his parents, Nguyen Van Viet, commonly known as Hoang Viet, had a poor childhood. Born into a family with a father who worked as a bricklayer and a mother who cut vegetables to sell to make a living, Hoang Viet always tried hard to study since he was young. In 2017, Viet was admitted to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, with a score of 27.5 in group C. Viet said that in his first year of university, he received financial support from his parents, but after that, he paid for all living expenses himself thanks to his "fate" with the MC job.
“Since 2018, I have taken on events big or small to gain experience and build relationships. I don’t have many costumes, so every time I host a show, I borrow clothes and do my own makeup. I am also aware that I come from a poor family, so I minimize unnecessary expenses such as drinking milk tea, eating snacks…”, Viet said.
After 2 years of saving, Viet helped his family build a house worth 1.2 billion VND.
In 2022, Viet participated in the KOC Vietnam program and won the runner-up prize. From here, the young man's career has improved a lot when he represented many brands, hosted big programs... Viet said that the highest month he earned was about 200 million VND and the lowest was 50 million VND. The young man spent about 45% of his income to cover daily expenses, the rest was saved with the intention of building a house for his parents in the countryside. Viet never kept a lot of cash on him but always transferred money into his account for easy management.

“I think that whoever makes a lot of money has to spend more than before. With my current income, I can afford to travel and eat at fancy restaurants… However, I always remember my starting point from a poor family, where I didn’t have enough to eat. If I lived in luxury but my parents were poor at home, I wouldn’t be happy. That’s why I always try to save up to build a house for my parents,” Viet said.
Try harder because of poor childhood
Viet said his parents in the countryside (Hoa Khanh commune, Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province) had to live in a wooden house with a corrugated iron roof for more than 30 years. “In the past, every time I came home from school at noon, my siblings, my grandmother and I had to lie under the wooden bed to avoid the heat,” Viet recalled.
Hoang Viet's family's new house has a modern design and full amenities.
In March 2023, Viet proposed to rebuild a new house for his parents after more than 2 years of saving. Because Viet's father is a bricklayer and also felt sorry for his son's money, he took on the construction for 6 months with the help of his younger brother. The house was completed in September, 200 square meters wide, not including construction costs, the cost of materials was more than 1.2 billion VND. Now, each person in Viet's family has their own room. The house is designed in a minimalist, modern style but no less convenient.
“In the area where my family lives, people all build very spacious houses. Only my family lives in a wooden house with a corrugated iron roof, so sometimes I feel very sad. My two younger siblings had already dropped out of school because of family difficulties, only the youngest is still in school. Up to now, I am the only one lucky enough to go to university, so I have to work hard for them,” Viet said.

Viet is determined that from now until Tet, he will save money to buy more furniture to make his house look more spacious.
With his son's support to build a new house worth billions, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (50 years old), Viet's father, emotionally said: "I never thought I would have money to build a house. When Viet passed the university entrance exam, I told him to try hard, even if I had to sell the land, I would take care of him to be successful. Seeing my son try hard and work hard, I wanted to build a house myself. If he contributed money, I must contribute labor. Viet is the son I am very proud of."
