Careful in choosing the direction

Nguyen Van Binh is a former student of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted (Nghe An), who won many national and international awards, including the Bronze Medal at the 2019 European Physics Olympiad. He planned to study abroad after finishing grade 12 in Vietnam. However, because he focused on studying for national and international competitions for excellent students, Binh did not have time to prepare his application for studying abroad. After graduating from high school, the male student chose the advanced program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Right from his first year of university, Nguyen Van Binh completed his studies and focused on preparing his study abroad application. Initially, he planned to study in the US but realized that the competition was high. Moreover, the cost of studying in the US was high, beyond the means of Binh’s family.

After researching schools that offer Computer Science and Information Technology, Binh turned to studying abroad in Singapore. Binh realized that this major is a cross between electrical engineering and computer science, which would help him develop his strengths in physics, as well as open up job opportunities in a field that is popular in the world. Moreover, tuition fees in this country are about 30,000 USD per year, half of that in the US. Finally, Binh decided to apply to the National University of Singapore and was admitted in 2020.

Overcome difficulties to succeed

During his first time studying in Singapore, Binh encountered many difficulties in communication. English was a field he was quite confident in, but when he came to Singapore, he could only understand what the lecturers were saying, but it was difficult for him to communicate with his friends because he could not understand the English accent of Singaporeans. To overcome this, Binh diligently talked and had activities to connect with his friends.

Another difficulty for Binh is that the curriculum is quite heavy, although he has somewhat become familiar with the curriculum at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Binh said that lecturers often teach a lot of knowledge in each class, so students who miss classes will have difficulty keeping up with the program. Moreover, the teachers' grading is also very strict, with only about 5% of students getting an A.

Aiming to achieve the best possible results, the male student outlined a specific study plan and method to strive for. After class, he diligently completed the assigned exercises, researched and learned more knowledge. He also practiced the skill of self-studying new knowledge. For issues he did not understand, Binh boldly discussed with teachers to understand the lesson more deeply.

One advantage Binh has is that he has been a teaching assistant since his second year of university. This has helped him gain a lot of knowledge and experience, and also helped him achieve excellent results in many subjects, including perfect scores in data structures and algorithms.

At the end of the program, Binh graduated with excellent results, beyond his expectations. He achieved a very high average score of 4.9/5, receiving the Halbrecht Associates Award for the student with the second highest average score in Computer Engineering.

Binh was quite surprised by this result because he did not think he would be in the top of his major. In the first year, Binh's scores were not as good as expected. As time went on, he made breakthroughs in his studies. In his final year, he achieved A's in most subjects, and also had the highest scores in 3 subjects: computer vision and pattern recognition, machine learning, and big data systems for data science. These are worthy results for the efforts of this highly disciplined young man.

In addition to studying, Binh also interned at 4 startups in Singapore and France. Working in these environments helped him become more creative and versatile. Binh's plan in the future is to work as a software engineer for a startup company specializing in providing human resource management, customer feedback and marketing solutions for multinational restaurant chains. With his talent, determination and eagerness to learn, Nguyen Van Binh will certainly reap many successes in the future.
