What are the requirements to practice clinical nutrition?

Ms. Hai asked, can she practice in the hospital nutrition department and apply for a practice license? Can she participate in consultations and provide nutrition advice to patients at the hospital? If she has a master's degree in nutrition, can she expand her scope of practice in nutrition? Can she open a nutrition clinic?

Regarding this issue, the Ministry of Health responded as follows:

Currently, the diploma used to obtain a license to practice with the scope of clinical nutrition practice is specified in Clause 4, Article 127 of Decree No. 96/2023/ND-CP dated December 30, 2023 of the Government, specifically as follows:

"4. For the title of clinical nutritionist with the scope of clinical nutrition practice:

a) College degree in nutrition, including graduation diplomas granted by foreign educational institutions recognized by the Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs as equivalent to college degree in nutrition;

b) Bachelor's degree in nutrition, including a graduation degree granted by a foreign educational institution recognized by the Minister of Education and Training as a bachelor's degree in nutrition;

c) Medical degree as prescribed in Clause 1 of this Article and a certificate of basic specialized training in nutrition".

She has a medical degree, but does not have a basic clinical nutrition training certificate. Therefore, her training certificate does not qualify her for a clinical nutrition practice scope.

In addition, if she has an additional master's degree in nutrition, if she ensures that she meets the requirements of "master's degree in the field of medical examination and treatment" as prescribed in Point d, Clause 1, Article 127 of Decree No. 96/2023/ND-CP dated December 30, 2023 of the Government, she is eligible to be granted or have her scope of practice of clinical nutrition adjusted.

Because she currently does not have a practice certificate, after obtaining a practice certificate to be granted an adjustment to the scope of practice of nutrition, she needs to apply according to the provisions of Article 125 of Decree No. 96/2023/ND-CP and have the diplomas and certificates according to the documents prescribed in Article 136 of Decree No. 96/2023/ND-CP.
