What skills are needed to apply for a job in an American company?

VnExpressVnExpress25/05/2023

Candidates who have the ability to establish relationships and communicate well, and promote team spirit, will have an advantage when applying to American businesses, according to many experts.

Talkshow "Sharing experiences working at American corporations" The afternoon of May 24 in Hanoi attracted many students, working people, and even 12th graders. The seats in the American Center auditorium of the US Embassy were almost full.

Ms. Bui Thi Viet Lam, representative in Vietnam, US-Vietnam Business Council, said that in addition to specific criteria related to job expertise, American businesses highly appreciate candidates' communication skills.

With 7 years of working for Fulbright University Vietnam and currently serving as a bridge between Vietnam and the US business community, according to Ms. Lam, US businesses often look for a candidate who can connect and work with teammates, instead of a "lone star" who wants to show off his or her talent and stand out but cannot work with others. Meanwhile, many young people often try to do this when entering a new working environment.

"I need someone who, first of all, must be a good teammate and know how to work with other members of the group. Without team spirit, it will be very difficult to work. That is a weakness of Vietnamese people," said Ms. Lam.

Agreeing with this opinion, Mr. Duong Vi Quan, Head of Global Banking at Citibank and Mr. Ngo Ha Quan, Financial Advisor at the World Bank, said that their success was largely due to knowing how to connect and build relationships (networking) at work.

Mr. Ngo Ha Quan said that candidates can approach businesses directly with outstanding abilities and create attention. For example, an engineering student who knows English, is friendly and enthusiastic during the internship period will receive sympathy from the boss and colleagues. However, for new graduates who have not had the opportunity to approach key figures in the business, they need to find their strengths, define their career dreams, and then work for Vietnamese companies. This process helps candidates expand, build relationships with colleagues in international businesses and participate in seminars and events to get acquainted with employers.

"If you network, treat relationships in a friendly, open and impartial way, and improve your professional knowledge, getting a job offer is just a matter of time," he said.

Mr. Vi Quan believes that building a network of relationships is a skill that must be learned, even though it is not easy for many people. As a technical person, he likes to research, it is not easy to talk to strangers, but sometimes he has to step out of his comfort zone.

According to Mr. Ha Quan, networking is about building quality relationships. If a candidate has talent but others do not know about it, he will have little chance to develop it. Therefore, candidates need to know what they want, then focus on places that can help their dreams come true soon.

Specifically, candidates approach people who have succeeded in the field they are pursuing. Even if you may not receive a job offer right away, you will have advice from people who have had to pay the price of 10-20 years to get results.

"They will summarize it for you in short sentences. That way, you will reduce the tuition fees you have to pay," Mr. Ha Quan analyzed.

As an introvert, Lam believes that it is important to invest in the relationships around her. The technology age has caused many people to spend less quality time with their loved ones, not realizing that they can be an important source of support. By maintaining regular relationships, she has been introduced to many good job opportunities.

"Investing in real relationships around you, friends and even people you have met is very important because you never know when an opportunity will come; or when there is an opportunity, they will remember and call you," she shared. Ms. Lam advised students to do internships as soon as possible to gain experience and have networking to help get a job.

Experts also note that building relationships must go hand in hand with honing professional skills. Mr. Ha Quan shared that he is often invited to work by businesses, instead of having to apply for a job. In each position, he tries to do his best, always preparing and honing. Therefore, when meeting people looking for new positions, he is ready and impresses them. Before joining the World Bank, he worked for 10 years for Standard Chartered Bank and investment funds.

Being recruited into American companies or any multinational corporation, in addition to salary and benefits, employees can also learn more about their expertise and receive many other great benefits. According to experts, these companies are always "fair" in terms of benefits, and you get what you pay for.

Nguyen Le Truc Lan, a student majoring in Finance at the Banking Academy, spoke highly of the practical experiences of the three experts at the workshop.

"The sharing session was very useful, helping me understand what foreign businesses need in a future candidate," Lan said.
