According to Minister Sorawong, the tourism program called “Northern Travel – Pay Together” is an initiative proposed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Accordingly, about 10,000 Thai people will receive a subsidy of up to 400 baht (more than 12 USD) for each trip to the northern provinces during the peak tourist season at the end of 2024.
The Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports said that this will be one of the urgent measures to quickly recover the tourism industry in the northern provinces, especially the top destinations such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. In addition, the Thai Cabinet will also consider other measures such as reducing electricity and water bills, providing preferential loans and providing tax deductions... to support tourism businesses to quickly recover.
Mr. Sorawong said the Thai government plans to hold a mobile cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai in the near future to consider measures to promote economic recovery in the northern provinces, which have suffered an estimated loss of nearly US$1 billion due to recent floods. If the “Northern Tourism - Pay Together” program is successfully implemented, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand will consider expanding the program to other areas.
Previously, after the Covid-19 pandemic was gradually controlled in 2022, the Thai Government launched a similar program called “We Travel Together”. A budget of 7.2 billion Baht was mobilized to support a discount of up to 40% on hotel, airfare and food costs for each trip of the people.
The program has encouraged Thai people to travel and spend more, thereby supporting the tourism industry to recover quickly after the pandemic.
