Although it is new to Vietnam, pickleball quickly attracts a large number of players because of the simplicity of this sport. Pickleball is a sport that combines tennis, badminton and table tennis. The pickleball court is similar in size to a badminton court, but with a net only as high as a tennis court.
Although it has similar characteristics to the three popular sports, the way pickleball serves is somewhat different and simpler.
Serving technique
Pickleball rules require the server to stand in the service area. The service area is located behind the baseline. If the server stands beyond the baseline, it is considered a foul.
The server must stand below the baseline (outside the court).
Players hold the racket in their dominant hand and the ball in their other hand. The most common grip is the Continental grip - the way you hold a tennis racket when you volley.
Once in the correct stance, the player gently releases the ball. When the ball falls to waist level, use the dominant hand to hit the ball into the opposite box on the opponent's court.
Notes on serving pickleball
The ball must be hit before it touches the ground, and the serve must come from below the waist. Additionally, the ball must go over the net, into the diagonal box on the opposite side of the court, into the opponent's service box.
If the ball does not fall into this area, the player is considered to have made a service error. If the ball flies low and straight, it will be more difficult for the opponent to counterattack.
The player drops the ball and then hits a forehand to serve.
To do this, make sure that the arm is not exerting too much force from the elbow joint. The ball can go into the net or fly out if the serve is too strong.
Serving in pickleball is a basic technique, but it takes a lot of practice to get used to it. In addition to the power factor, spin and serving position are also very important in pickleball.
What is a legal serve in pickleball?
A successful serve is when the ball passes over the net, beyond the non-volley zone, and into the opponent's service box. If the ball accidentally touches the net but still lands in the opponent's service box, the serve is still considered valid.
The server must hit the ball into the opponent's cross-court service box for the serve to be valid.
If the ball goes over the net but falls into the Non Volley Zone or out of bounds, the referee will call a foul.
In singles, if a player makes a service error, they do not lose the point, but the serve goes to the opponent.
In doubles, if the first server makes a mistake, their partner gets to serve.
