Changing lifestyle, not keeping warm, eating a lot of candy, and drinking iced water are Tet habits that can cause children to cough a lot.
Dr. Nguyen Nhu Duy, ENT Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that besides changes in weather and external factors, daily habits and care during Tet can make children cough a lot.
Children drink ice water : During the holidays, many parents are often busy and do not control their children from drinking ice water, eating ice cream, or drinking cold drinks. Drinking too much ice water can damage the throat lining, causing irritation and leading to coughing.
Dietary changes : Many dishes on the Tet tray can trigger coughs, such as seafood, spicy foods, greasy foods, grilled foods, and frozen foods. Children often eat a lot, and consume many dishes that can cause coughs.
In addition, children who eat a lot of sweets and jams can irritate the throat lining, leading to coughing. Children who eat sunflower seeds and watermelon seeds can cough and even choke.

Children with allergic rhinitis or sinusitis : During holidays, every household displays flowers and burns incense. Children with allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, when inhaling these scents or pet hair, smoke and dust, can develop postnasal drip, with secretions flowing down the back of the throat causing coughing.
Not keeping children warm: During Tet, the weather turns cold and humidity changes erratically, creating conditions for many respiratory viruses to develop. If you do not keep your child warm and clean their nose and throat, bacteria will grow and easily cause respiratory diseases in children.
Children's lifestyle changes: Going out, traveling to many places, visiting relatives and friends causes children's sleeping time to change. Children's immune systems are weakened, increasing the risk of diseases, including respiratory diseases.
Due to cigarette smoke: During the holidays, children tend to go out and interact with many people, especially in public places. Cigarette smoke from these environments is a factor that leads to inflammation of the respiratory tract mucosa, causing cough.
To prevent children from coughing during Tet, Dr. Duy advises parents to keep their children warm when going out in cold weather. If children sweat a lot while playing and running, they should take off some of their clothes and dry the sweat to avoid catching a cold. Balance children's nutrition, prioritize foods that are cool, rich in vitamins and minerals, and avoid foods that can irritate the throat lining and cause coughing.
Parents should arrange a schedule for their children to get enough sleep and maintain hygiene to help them increase their resistance and avoid respiratory diseases that cause coughs.
