New research just published in the scientific journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases , has shown the best way to make coffee to help you prevent increasing bad cholesterol.
Many studies have shown numerous benefits of coffee, including lowering blood cholesterol. However, some compounds in coffee may counteract these benefits. These include the diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, which can increase bad cholesterol levels.
The benefits of coffee may depend on how many cups you drink each day, when you drink it, and how you brew it.

Therefore, in order to find the best way to brew coffee to remove the above substances, scientists at Uppsala University in collaboration with experts at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) conducted a test to measure the cafestol and kahweol content in coffee - brewed from 14 different types of coffee machines and coffee brewed in the traditional way such as boiling, filtering through a filter or regular filter paper and even filtering through cloth.
Filtering coffee can make a big difference
The results found that manual coffee brewing methods using filters or paper filters were best at removing these two cholesterol-raising substances, according to ScienceAlert.
As for boiled coffee, if not filtered through cloth, the content of cafestol and kahweol is high. However, after filtering through cloth, the content of these two substances is significantly reduced.
In contrast, machine-brewed coffee still contains quite high levels of cafestol and kahweol.
The filtration process plays an important role in removing cholesterol-raising substances in coffee, said study author David Iggman, associate professor of clinical nutrition at Uppsala University.
It turns out that the manual method of brewing coffee through a filter or filter paper is the best.

The research team calculated the benefits of drinking three cups of coffee a day, five days a week and found: Drinking coffee filtered through a filter or paper filter can reduce bad cholesterol levels equivalent to a 13% risk of cardiovascular disease due to atherosclerosis in 5 years and a 36% risk reduction in 40 years, compared to drinking machine-brewed coffee.
The researchers concluded: For people who drink a lot of coffee every day, it is clear that filtered coffee (through a filter, paper filter or cloth) is the better choice.
However, if you're used to enjoying machine-brewed coffee, don't worry. Because many studies have shown that drinking coffee regularly is actually good for the heart, regardless of how it's brewed, according to ScienceAlert.
