Dr. Bui Pham Minh Man, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, said that the rainy season is the time when respiratory diseases easily break out due to humid weather conditions and sudden changes in temperature.

According to the Department of Examination - Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital - Branch 3, the number of cases of respiratory infections such as colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis... is on the rise during the rainy season. In particular, the most vulnerable groups are children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems.

Symptoms of respiratory tract infection

Respiratory tract infections can start with mild symptoms, which can then progress to dangerous complications if not treated properly. Mild symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, dry cough or cough with phlegm, sore throat, hoarseness, fatigue, headache, mild fever... Moderate symptoms include prolonged high fever, above 38.5°C, chest pain, mild shortness of breath, cough with green, yellow or pus phlegm, loss of taste or smell, body aches. Severe symptoms (ie needing immediate emergency care) require attention to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, pale lips and skin, fainting, dizziness, severe chest pain that does not stop, coughing up blood, altered perception, drowsiness, loss of consciousness...

When is medical intervention needed?

According to Dr. Man, if you or a loved one has the following symptoms, you should see a doctor immediately or call an ambulance: high fever above 39 degrees Celsius that does not decrease after taking fever-reducing medicine; difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, especially when unable to lie flat or when lying down, it is more difficult to breathe; cough lasting more than 10 days, especially coughing up blood or phlegm of strange color (green, dark yellow); excessive fatigue, unable to do normal activities; children and the elderly have the disease lasting more than 3 days without improvement.

Instructions for care when suffering from respiratory tract infection

  • Get plenty of rest: Help your body recover, avoid strenuous activities.
  • Drink plenty of fluids: Especially warm water to keep your throat moist and help loosen phlegm.
  • Use medication properly: Pain relievers and fever reducers such as paracetamol can be used. However, it is necessary to follow the dosage and instructions of the doctor.
  • Keep your body warm: Especially the neck, chest and legs.
  • Personal hygiene: Gargle with warm salt water, wash hands regularly, wear a mask when in contact with others.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Increase foods rich in vitamin C (oranges, lemons, grapefruit) and other nutrients to improve resistance.

  • Wear a mask: When going out or in crowded places, wearing a mask helps prevent viruses from spreading through droplets.
  • Maintain a cool living environment: Keep your house clean, dry, and avoid moisture to prevent bacteria from growing.
  • Boost your immune system: By eating healthy, taking vitamins, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep.
