The “Salt Coffee” shop in Hue is widely credited with inventing this popular drink, made by adding sweetened condensed milk to Vietnamese coffee. The mixture is topped with salted cream and served either iced or hot.
"We created Salt Coffee in 2010 when we opened the first Salt Coffee shop at 10 Nguyen Luong Bang Street," co-owners Ho Thi Thanh Huong and Tran Nguyen Huu Phong told CNN.

What makes salt coffee special is the combination of condensed milk, salt and black coffee, creating a creamy mixture that softens the bitterness of the coffee and balances the sweetness of the condensed milk.
Sharing with the American newspaper, the co-owner of "Salt Coffee" said that this drink is now known as a specialty drink representing Hue and coffee shops across Vietnam have also started serving this dish.
Mr. Phong and Ms. Huong's shop is now also bottling and selling all over Vietnam, and international tourists coming to Vietnam are also looking to try this type of coffee, just like they tried egg coffee in Hanoi.
"Even Starbucks's branch in Vietnam is joining the salt coffee wave, launching its own version of salt coffee in May 2024" - CNN reported.

Perhaps the most famous of these is egg coffee, invented in Hanoi. This dessert-like egg coffee recipe adds a topping of egg yolks, frothed with condensed milk, to the coffee base.
Vietnamese coffee drinks also include specialty coconut coffee, smoothie coffee or yogurt coffee...
According to a report released by global market research firm Mintel in 2023, consumers outside Asia are increasingly interested in new coffee experiences and flavors.
About 71% of Gen Z consumers surveyed by Mintel in the US said they are interested in trying Asian-inspired coffee drinks like Vietnamese coffee.
