According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnamese tuna exports to the UK have grown by 'steps'. Export value increased from 5.1 million USD in 2021 to nearly 8 million in 2024, with the first two months of this year alone increasing by 24% compared to the same period last year.
69% of Brits tend to choose canned tuna
According to VASEP, the "key" to the growth of tuna exports to the UK is thanks to free trade agreements such as the Vietnam - UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)...
These agreements bring many benefits to seafood businesses in terms of tariffs and intra-bloc origin...
Tuna is the third largest retail fish in the UK by sales in 2024, after salmon and cod. In the UK, tuna is a staple in fast food, such as sandwiches, and in many on-the-go meals.
VASEP cited statistics from the Seafish agency (Public Health Agency of England), 69% of British people's choices in the canned seafood group are tuna products.
"Due to the characteristics of fatty fish, it is quite suitable for many forms of processing. Some other processed tuna products such as salads, side dishes, bread or in many meals when traveling... are also very popular in this market," VASEP explained.
Tuna exporting businesses no longer have to face difficulties due to… rules of origin
In the context of key export markets declining due to geopolitical tensions and general difficulties of the global economy, Vietnamese tuna in the UK is having an advantage.
According to a seafood export enterprise in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnamese enterprises exporting tuna to the UK will have many long-term advantages.
Firstly, according to the CPTPP Agreement, Vietnam's processed and canned tuna will have its tax reduced from 20% to 0% over a 7-year period.
Second, with the UKVFTA Agreement, products also enjoy a preferential tax rate of 0% according to the quota of 11,500 tons.
"The biggest benefit that CPTPP brings is the rules of origin. Because for a long time, the rules of origin of goods have made it difficult for tuna exporting enterprises. For example, the requirement that raw materials used for processing and export must have pure origin, origin within the bloc...
Having been "untied", taking advantage of this opportunity, Vietnamese tuna exporting enterprises need to proactively source tuna materials, which determines competitiveness," he said.
Currently in the UK market, Ecuador and China are two "heavyweight" competitors of Vietnamese tuna.
Tuna accounts for 10% of total seafood export turnover.
According to VASEP, in 2024, tuna export turnover will grow by 17% compared to 2023 and nearly reach the milestone of approximately 1 billion USD.
Tuna always accounts for the largest proportion of total seafood export turnover, and this is the third most valuable commodity group, accounting for 10% of Vietnam's total seafood export turnover, after shrimp and tra fish.
