(Dan Tri) - Before the news that Dak Lak Robusta coffee husks were exported at a price of nearly 1 million VND/kg to make high-class tea, many farmers were very excited because up to now, coffee husks were either thrown away or only used as fertilizer.
2-9 Import-Export Company Limited, under the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee, recently exported the first batch of coffee husks with a total weight of 500kg to South Korea at a price of nearly 1 million VND/kg.
Selected, deeply processed coffee husks are used to produce Cascara tea. This is considered a high-class beverage with a unique flavor and high nutritional value.

According to information from the shipment owner, the export of Dak Lak coffee husks opens up many opportunities for long-term cooperation and development, contributing to increasing the value of Vietnamese coffee in the international market.
Raw material purchasing businesses support farmers to maximize the value of each part of the coffee fruit, increase income and promote environmentally friendly agricultural models.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tan (55 years old), a coffee farmer in Buon Ma Thuot city, was surprised that coffee husks could be exported and sold at high prices.
According to Mr. Tan, in the past, when it came to coffee husks, people who were diligent only knew how to use them as fertilizer to make the soil loose and porous. No one thought that coffee husks could be used to create high-class tea.
"We farmers are very excited to hear this news and hope that processing enterprises and cooperatives will guide people in taking care of their plants so that they can exploit and sell coffee husks, contributing to increasing income for growers," said Mr. Tan.

Not only Mr. Tan, many farmers in Dak Lak were also surprised that coffee husks were purchased at a price 4 times higher than the current price of green coffee (120,000-135,000 VND/kg).
Mr. Le Duc Huy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of 2-9 Import-Export Company Limited, said that exporting Robusta coffee husks at a price of nearly 1 million VND/kg to the Korean market has turned the long-unthinkable into reality.
"Initial results show that coffee growers need to change their farming methods towards sustainability, not using chemicals in the coffee care process to produce coffee beans with sweet skin, qualified to be fermented to make specialty tea.
In fact, what we know about coffee products is still limited and the potential of the industry is still huge," Mr. Huy commented.

According to Mr. Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, Cascara tea made from coffee husks appeared about 5 years ago, the consumption market is small and strict.
According to Mr. Minh, Son La province used to export Arabica coffee husks. Now, for the first time, Dak Lak has received an order to export Robusta coffee husks.
"This product has strict hygiene requirements, and is an ingredient used to make tea and drink directly, so food safety is very important. Therefore, to sell coffee husks, farmers must master and understand the requirements of the product. They should not rush to make this product, but should link up with cooperatives and reputable companies with outputs to get specific guidance and cooperation," the Chairman of the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association recommended.
