British University Vietnam (BUV) strengthens cooperation, upgrades training programs, facilities... to meet the demand for high-quality human resources for the gaming industry.

At the end of 2023, British University Vietnam (BUV) and the National Innovation Center (NIC) exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding on strategic cooperation to develop the Vietnamese gaming industry, focusing on areas such as promoting knowledge and learning exchange, collaborating on research and innovation projects, and enhancing the school's role in the NIC technology game development ecosystem.

BUV also decided to establish BUV GamePad - Center for Innovation, Investment and Startup Incubation for Projects on Programming - Design - Game Graphics (BUV GamePad – the Innovation, Investment, and Entrepreneurship Centre for Computer Games Programming, Art, and Design). The unit expects the project to become a launching pad for young talents, attracting and training through a nurturing model and development orientation for developers, programmers, and designers.

The school has started teaching the Bachelor of Game Design and Programming program since 2018 and continues to enroll students for the Bachelor of Game Graphics (Games Art) for the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Both training programs are awarded by Staffordshire University (UK), the world's top 7 school for Game Design and Development training in 2023, according to The Rookies .

BUV equips students with a foundation of formal knowledge and practical skills. In parallel, the school built a Game Studio with modern facilities to optimize practice efficiency. This includes a computer lab with new, high-configuration computers; a game design and programming room (CGDP Room) equipped with a 27-inch screen that can be adjusted in height and rotated to suit each need; a motion capture studio with a green screen, motion capture equipment for game programming, specialized cameras, virtual reality glasses (VR)...

In addition, all bachelors of game programs at BUV have the opportunity to participate in creative game development projects under the evaluation and guidance of lecturers and leading experts. The school also conducts programs and competitions in this field to create conditions for students to experience the real game making environment. In particular, the Game Jam competition is a playground for challenging game creation in 44 consecutive hours. Thanks to these activities, students can hone their "real-life" skills and gain understanding of the actual game making process.

Explaining further about the investment in expanding training in the Game industry, the BUV representative said that the Ministry of Information and Communications set a target that after 5 years, the game industry's revenue will increase from 600 million USD to 1 billion USD and become one of the key development industries of the country. In that context, many businesses and educational institutions are also focusing on developing human resources to meet market demand.

The industry has received such attention and investment thanks to its great potential in recent years. Industry revenue reached more than 600 million USD, ranking fourth in Southeast Asia. With 54.6 million users and a growth rate of 9% per year, higher than the regional average (8.2%), Vietnam is highly appreciated by experts.

Bloomberg News Agency rated Vietnam as a gaming powerhouse, in the top 5 countries producing mobile games in the world, based on downloads in the first six months of 2023. However, the gap with the world's leading group is still far when considering the criteria of complexity, quality of game feel, and graphics. Meanwhile, training to improve the expertise of the staff is a positive solution to this problem.

According to the school representative, as the gaming industry is increasingly proving its position, the Government, private units, and training institutions are also increasingly actively contributing to the overall development of the industry.

"When educational institutions take pioneering steps and invest methodically and thoroughly, young people will have more options for training programs, joining the team of skilled personnel for the Vietnamese gaming industry in the near future," the representative added.
