Burnley kept 28 clean sheets in the 2024/25 Championship. |
The race for promotion to the Premier League in the 2024/25 Championship is about to enter the final stages, with three teams fiercely competing for the two direct spots. Sheffield United currently lead the rankings with 83 points after 39 matches, while Leeds United are second with 81 points.
Burnley also have 81 points, but the Lancashire side are behind Leeds United on goal difference. As well as aiming for promotion, Scott Parker's side are also aiming to set a record for the most clean sheets in a single English football season.
Burnley have conceded just 11 goals in 39 Championship games this season, keeping 28 clean sheets - the third-most in a single season in English top-flight football.
Burnley's record is only surpassed by Gillingham (29 clean sheets in 1995/96) and Port Vale, who held the record with 30 in 1953/54. Port Vale's record stood for 71 years, but is now in danger of being broken.
With seven Championship games remaining this season, Burnley need two clean sheets to equal the record and three to surpass it. Burnley's upcoming fixtures include matches against Coventry City (away), Derby County (home), Norwich City (home), Watford (away), Sheffield United (home), QPR (away) and Millwall (home).
Earlier in the season, Burnley became the first team in the Championship to keep 10 consecutive clean sheets, going 1,214 minutes without conceding a goal. With a solid defence as the foundation, Parker's Burnley are on the verge of not only promotion but also making history.
