Those are the things people know about Bui Tran Quoc Dat , a student at Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City campus II. But hidden behind the bright smile of the 20-year-old boy that everyone often sees is the worry that his family did not support his decision to study at this school.
By opening my heart and changing my perspective, I realized that there are many things I can share with the life around me and things are no longer so harsh.

Live in the active voice

Having passed the 10th grade math major of a specialized school in Ho Chi Minh City, Dat decided to study in his hometown of Dak Lak, and he said he never regretted that decision. Studying in his hometown, he had more time to participate in activities he loved. Although he studied math major and was selected to compete in the national excellent student competition, Dat still managed to complete the IELTS 8.0 certificate. Participating in volunteer and skill clubs in the province, Dat said he gradually matured and created many values for the community, always feeling happy. After that, this friend collaborated with a university lecturer to establish an English club in Buon Ma Thuot , attracting nearly 2,000 members. "I am not an exceptionally intelligent person, I just always persevere in pursuing my passion. Whether studying or working, I have to be very focused and responsible. I think I study effectively because I often find connections between school knowledge and real life," Quoc Dat shared. When he had quite a few achievements beyond expectations in the first year of university, he was loved by many people but many others also "scrutinized" every action of Dat. And you are worried about the judgments that make your mood somewhat negative. But the story that Dat still feels heartbroken every time he mentions is when he knew his scores passed the entrance exam to the desired schools. He excitedly bragged about the foreign trade school he wanted to study. Contrary to Quoc Dat's excitement, his family indifferently received the news because they only wanted their son to study at the police school . Crying alone, even locking himself in the closet to hide from everyone, Dat said that at that time he felt lonely in his own house. Finally, when they could not change their son, the family reluctantly let him study foreign trade. But until now, Dat said that the words "At some point you will regret this" on the day his parents sent him off to Saigon to study still ring in his ears.

Desire to connect the community

Dat said he was always aware that his parents loved him very much. To him, his parents were also his biggest idols when they built their lives, starting from scratch. His father migrated from the North to the South alone, doing manual labor jobs to earn money to support his children.
"My parents just wanted to choose the safest path for me, afraid that I would be unemployed after graduation, afraid that the major would not suit my personality. But I know clearly what I want," Quoc Dat shared. To create trust, Dat contacted many acquaintances, gathered almost all the answers related to the foreign trade school he was studying at, and answered his parents' concerns. Not only that, he also asked his cousin to talk to his parents in a "slow and steady" way. Instead of being sad or thinking about his mother's words, he considered it a motivation, pushing him to move forward in his studies, spending time on research. And Saigon to Dat is such a special land that makes him always eager to explore and want to connect. There, Quoc Dat got to meet, study, and work with many talented people and felt like there was an invisible thread connecting him, making him love this place more and more each day. When he founded the English club in his hometown, he not only saw the benefits of being good at foreign languages that would be necessary for the future career of young people, but his greater desire was to connect. Dat said that in Dak Lak there are about 40 ethnic groups living together and his greatest wish is to be able to connect the community together because the current activities are quite scattered. Therefore, sometimes just a text message "Dat, today I talked to a foreigner for a few sentences and they understood" that a club member bragged about would make him moved, happier than the bright red scores or high achievements in each competition he participated in. "Although the activities are quite difficult because the Kinh people speak Kinh, let alone English, we are still determined to maintain this club," Quoc Dat said.

Your family will appreciate your efforts.

As a lecturer and instructor of Quoc Dat's scientific research, I find him very active and sharp. This is clearly shown when Dat still has good academic results while working part-time, actively participating in Youth Union - Association activities and winning high prizes in academic competitions. I think that is a quality not only of Dat but of many foreign trade students facing increasingly strict market demands. When I learned that Dat had bravely defended his choice of where to study, I personally did not think it was the stubbornness of youth but this is very admirable. Of course, the guidance and advice of adults still have a certain value, but only each person understands their own abilities and passions. So that choice shows that you have a high sense of independence and responsibility for yourself. Master LY NGOC YEN NHI (Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City Campus II)
