(TN&MT) - On the morning of February 4, at Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve (Thai Thuy, Thai Binh), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with the People's Committee of Thai Binh province to organize the launching ceremony of "Tree Planting Festival in eternal gratitude to Uncle Ho" and respond to World Wetlands Day 2025. Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Do Duc Duy chaired the ceremony.
Attending the event were Secretary of Thai Binh Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Khac Than, Chairman of Thai Binh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Manh Hung, Chief Representative of UNDP Vietnam Ramla Khalidi; leaders of units under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Thai Binh Provincial People's Committee and a large number of people in Thai Thuy district.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Do Duc Duy said that a year begins with Spring with many good things, the season when trees sprout, bloom, bear fruit, the season of growth and development. During his lifetime, beloved President Ho Chi Minh taught everyone to plant at least one tree on Tet holiday to contribute to making the homeland and country more and more springy. Since then, "Tet tree planting to forever remember Uncle Ho" has become a festival for the entire Party, people and army every time Tet comes and Spring comes.
According to Minister Do Duc Duy, tree planting, forest protection and development are becoming increasingly important in the context of environmental pollution and global climate change, which are challenges that greatly affect socio-economic development as well as people's quality of life. Tree development plays an important role in nature conservation, biodiversity protection and environmental improvement; contributing to minimizing the impact of natural disasters, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and responding more effectively to climate change; at the same time, promoting sustainable development of the country.
For the 2025 Tree Planting Festival, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Thai Binh Province selected Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve, which has an important and typical position in the conservation of biodiversity values in coastal wetlands, to organize the Launching Ceremony and respond to World Wetlands Day. In which, it emphasizes the joint efforts of the community to protect wetland ecosystems, towards a world where everyone can benefit from the life-sustaining services that wetlands provide.
On behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Minister Do Duc Duy hopes that agencies, units, businesses, international organizations in Vietnam and each family and individual will join hands, contribute and actively participate in tree planting and afforestation activities.
Specifically, increase tree planting activities across the country, not only during Tet and Spring, but also in Spring and other seasons of the year when the weather conditions are suitable. Thoroughly grasp and widely spread President Ho Chi Minh's thoughts on the significance of tree planting as an activity that "costs little but brings many benefits", making an important contribution to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem restoration.
At the same time, promote community-based nature conservation solutions. According to the Minister, all organizations and individuals in the social community need to join hands to prevent illegal logging and exploitation of forests. Promote propaganda and provide people with adequate knowledge and skills on forest protection and development, especially forest development by planting multi-purpose trees. Timely encourage, reward, and replicate good models and effective methods to create a spread and promote the common efforts of the whole society in forest protection, development, nature conservation and biodiversity.
In addition, effectively implement the National Action Plan on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetlands for the 2021-2030 period; integrate the content on wetland value protection, management, restoration and sustainable use of wetlands into local socio-economic development plans, programs and projects. Thereby, contributing to the effective implementation of the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1352/QD-TTg dated November 8, 2024.
Responding to the ceremony, Chairman of Thai Binh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed that "we should always promote the role and importance of wetland ecosystems in protecting biodiversity and ensuring living environment for humans. Nature has created wetlands in the coastal areas of Thai Binh province, with high biodiversity value."
According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Thai Binh province has now established two wetland nature reserves (Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve and Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve), which are home to many species of animals and plants listed in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world... Therefore, protecting and developing these areas is a particularly important task.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung said that in recent years, the province has achieved many encouraging results in environmental protection and sustainable development. However, the task of protecting nature and restoring wetland ecosystems remains a big challenge. “I call on all agencies, units, organizations and every citizen in the province to actively participate in the movement of planting trees and forests to protect the environment, respond to climate change and sustainably develop the mangrove ecosystem. Each person has a tree, each house has a garden, join hands to build a green and sustainable Thai Binh.” – Mr. Hung said.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Representative in Vietnam, said that in 2019, UNDP was honored to accompany and support Thai Binh province in establishing Thai Thuy Wetland Reserve. The care and preservation of this reserve is proof that Vietnam can pursue economic growth and development without sacrificing or trading off the environment.
According to Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP has been supporting Viet Nam in its efforts to conserve and restore wetland ecosystems and mangrove forests in general. UNDP’s long-term cooperation with MONRE, MARD and local authorities has resulted in the planting and restoration of more than 4,000 hectares of mangroves since 2017, with plans to plant an additional 1,000 hectares in the coming years. Through the Climate Promise initiative, and is supporting the development of a coastal mangrove carbon database, which will serve as an important input for conservation and climate resilience policies.
Ms. Ramla Khalidi affirmed that UNDP is committed to continuing to be a reliable partner of Vietnam in promoting nature conservation, protecting wetlands and responding to climate change.
On this occasion, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and accompanying units presented Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve and the people of the district with 10,000 trees, including Trang and Ban trees, which are native trees suitable for the natural conditions, soil and climate of Thai Thuy wetland.
