Selected to be featured in the program "Cine7 - Memories of Vietnamese Films", broadcast at 9:10 p.m. on March 29 on VTV3 - Vietnam Television, the program will meet and talk with People's Artist Nhu Quynh and Artist Viet Lien - the main characters in the movie "Saint's Day".

1970s Drama

A psychological drama film directed by Bach Diep, made in 1976, "Saint's Day" was adapted from the novel "Sea Storm" by writer Chu Van, telling about the social life of a northern coastal Catholic village in the early 60s of the 20th century.

The movie

People's Artist Tra Giang - role of Ms. Nhan.

Throughout the film is the story of two sisters Nhan and Ai, two married women but both live in unhappy marriages. If the older sister - Nhan married a violent husband, often beat his wife and eventually fled to the south to join the enemy, then the younger sister - Ai was not any happier, the loveless marriage turned her into a servant in her husband's family, then had a husband but was not cared for, even her husband openly lived with another woman, all the people in the area knew.

However, because the harsh thoughts were deeply rooted in their minds, they did not dare to escape to seek personal happiness. The older sister even deliberately destroyed her younger sister's new happiness, not letting Ai come to Vuong - even though she knew he truly loved her sister.

The movie

Artist Viet Lien - role of Mr. Vuong.

From the story of two sisters Nhan and Ai, who have an unhappy marriage but are bound by old ideas, the film gradually unties the knots in the lives of two women, and then the details contribute to expanding to the problems of the whole society.

Indelible mark

Participating in the success of the film are veteran artists: People's Artist Tra Giang - as Ms. Nhan; People's Artist Nhu Quynh - as Ms. Ai; Artist Viet Lien - as Anh Vuong and People's Artist Tran Phuong - as Anh Tiep.

Sharing about her journey to play the role of a coastal woman, People's Artist Nhu Quynh said she had to learn to speak loudly and walk strongly to portray her character, and could not speak softly as usual.

As for People's Artist Tra Giang, although she had read the original novel "Sea Storm", she never expected to be chosen to play the role of Ms. Nhan. Because before the movie "Saint's Day", she had never played a formidable, shrewish and "ignorant" role like Ms. Nhan.

However, when playing the roles of the two sisters Nhan and Ai, both actresses performed excellently, truly becoming women of the coastal region, speaking out of turn, with the unique personalities of each character.

The movie

People's Artist Nhu Quynh - role of Miss Ai.

As for artist Viet Lien, this is his first time acting in a movie. The role of Vuong came to him by chance while helping his mother sell goods. After carrying a heavy sack home, the young man Viet Lien of 50 years ago took off his shirt to cool off, revealing his strong body and healthy appearance. It was at that moment that he caught the eye of director Bach Diep and was chosen to play the role of Vuong, a simple and honest coastal boy who loves Ai with all his heart, even though social prejudices seemed to prevent them from being together.

Even if you look closely at many crowded scenes in the film, the audience will be surprised to realize that “Saint’s Day” has many supporting roles played by famous actors, in today’s language, “cameo” roles. We can list Meritorious Artist Phuong Thanh, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Thu, Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen, actor Dung Nhi…

Explaining this interesting detail, Meritorious Artist Nhu Quynh said that the film “Saint’s Day” was filmed at the exact time when the 2nd Cinema class of the University of Theatre and Cinema went on an internship, so the film had such a large cast of “cameos”.

Although it is a film with a theme that is considered very new, even somewhat risky at the present time, it cannot be denied that "Saint's Day" is like a breath of fresh air in the period of Vietnamese Revolutionary cinema in the 1970s.

With the way of building the personality of the characters, the way of mentioning and resolving conflicts in a gentle and easy-to-understand way, the film has partly portrayed the image of soldiers on the silent but also difficult front. Trying to erase the old, the backward and liberate the people's thoughts, so that society can change for the better.
