The Ministry of Education and Training will review all admission methods of schools, after receiving many opinions about some schools using Literature scores to consider admission to medical majors.
On June 28, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that the Ministry is listening to opinions from training units and experts on adding Literature to the admissions group for the medical major at some private universities.
Of the 27 universities that train in medicine in Vietnam, four schools use a combination of subjects including Literature for admission. Specifically, Van Lang University in Ho Chi Minh City uses combination D12 (Literature, Chemistry, English); Vo Truong Toan University in Hau Giang and Tan Tao University in Long An use combination B03 (Math, Literature, Biology); Duy Tan University in Da Nang uses combination A16 (Math, Natural Sciences, Literature).
The use of combinations containing Literature to recruit medical students has caused mixed reactions. Representatives of schools said that Literature is necessary, showing the ability to communicate, sympathize, and share - factors that a doctor needs. Meanwhile, many doctors and medical lecturers are concerned, saying that this is only to serve the recruitment strategy.
These opinions, according to Ms. Thuy, are positive signals. The fact that schools exchange and explain to society also exudes a spirit of autonomy.
The Director of the Department of Higher Education believes that schools will be affected first by their own admission methods. Accordingly, any school with an inappropriate admission form and method, or with too low an entrance fee, will affect its reputation, brand, and training quality, and in the long run, candidates will certainly not choose it.
"In the coming time, the Ministry of Education and Training will review the overall admission methods of schools. If necessary, the Ministry will request relevant training institutions to report and explain issues of concern to society," said Ms. Thuy.

Responding to VnExpress on May 27, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training, Ministry of Health, said that the Ministry's leaders were concerned about schools using a combination of Literature subjects for admission because it was unclear how the basis and method of admission would affect the quality of training.
The Ministry of Health believes that schools must analyze, explain clearly and convincingly about the scientific and practical basis for the necessity and reasons for including Literature in the medical entrance exam.
Mr. Long also said that the Minister of Health will discuss directly with the Minister of Education and Training about enrollment in health sectors. If necessary, he will advise sending an official dispatch to the Ministry of Education and Training, requesting clarification on enrollment of schools.
