Complications from double chin treatment at home, unlicensed spa

At the 20th annual scientific conference of the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Association with the theme of Improving the quality of care and treatment of dermatological diseases on May 26, Dr. Lu Huynh Thanh Thao - Department of dermatological aesthetics, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital - said that recently the hospital has received many cases of complications when treating double chin.

The first case is a 60-year-old female patient (residing in Bao Loc City, Lam Dong). The patient went to a spa in Da Lat City to get fat injected into her double chin area.

Two weeks after the injection, the injection site was swollen and painful. The patient took medication but it did not improve, so she went to the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital for examination. The patient was diagnosed with subcutaneous fat cellulitis after double chin fat dissolving injection.

The second case is a 34-year-old female patient. She wanted to treat her double chin with fat-dissolving injections, so she went to a spa in Dong Nai to get injections into her double chin area.

Two days after the injection, the patient felt pain, swelling, and burning sensation at the injection site, so he went to the Dermatology Department of Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital for a check-up. The ultrasound doctor found that the patient had fluid accumulation in the double chin area, and was diagnosed with abscess after fat-dissolving injection to treat double chin...

Doctor Thanh Thao said that the possible causes of complications in the above cases are mainly due to the patients being treated at unlicensed medical facilities and spas; the person performing the injection is not a professionally trained doctor, the injection technique is incorrect; the injection is in dangerous areas or sterile procedures are not followed during treatment.

According to Dr. Thanh Thao, a double chin is a condition in which the area under the chin becomes fuller, a skin fold appears between the face and neck, the neck angle is wider than 120 degrees, often accompanied by loss of contour of the lower jawline and jaw angle.

The above condition appears in young people due to defective chin bone, low hyoid bone, or due to fat accumulation under the skin as well as loose, sagging skin in the elderly...

According to statistics, 78% of people think that having a double chin is less attractive. A 2017 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 73% of respondents felt uncomfortable because of their double chin.
