Can Tho Secretary directs early restart of Oncology Hospital project '8 years of construction not completed'

On April 1, Can Tho City Party Secretary Do Thanh Binh and Can Tho City People's Committee Chairman Truong Canh Tuyen inspected key projects, including the Can Tho Oncology Hospital project, which has been under construction for 8 years and has not been completed, causing recent outrage.

Here, after listening to the project status report, Mr. Do Thanh Binh requested the Can Tho Department of Health to quickly overcome difficulties to restart the project. He said that medical equipment after two years is outdated, so the investor must have a calculation to report to the leaders of the City People's Committee and discuss with experts to get advice.

This project once heated up the Can Tho City People's Council at the end of 2024, when the City People's Council delegate said that the project had been under construction since 2017 and had not been completed. The delegate said that this was one of the projects in the city's wasteful project cluster, and asked for a plan to overcome this waste?

At that time, Mr. Hoang Quoc Cuong, director of the Can Tho City Department of Health, said that the City People's Committee had established a special working group to resolve issues related to this hospital.

On November 8, 2024, Can Tho proposed four contents to the Prime Minister. First, adjust the project implementation time to the end of 2027. Second, adjust the project implementation capital from ODA capital to domestic capital.

Third is to adjust the list related to medical equipment and construction materials. Fourth, adjust the arising volume.

According to Mr. Cuong, after determining the capital source, the department will submit to the City People's Committee to adjust the policy according to the newly issued public investment law. After adjusting the project policy, if there is capital, the project will be restarted as soon as possible. In 2025, if the procedures for adjusting the policy and project are completed and the capital is provided, the project can continue to be implemented.

The Can Tho Oncology Hospital project with a scale of 500 beds, invested by the Department of Health, started construction in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2022. This hospital serves the examination and treatment of diseases for the entire Mekong Delta region in the context of the old Oncology Hospital being overloaded and degraded.

This project has a total investment capital of more than 1,700 billion VND, of which nearly 1,400 billion VND is ODA loan from the Hungarian Government, the rest is counterpart capital of the city.
