On December 8, the British Film Institute (BFI) announced the results of a vote by more than 100 contributors. Accordingly, Pham Thien An's work was ranked equal with The Boy and the Heron directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
One of the reviewers, film critic Jonathan Romney, commented: " Inside the Golden Cocoon combines historical themes, Catholicism and the search for meaning in life. The cocoon symbolizes the illusions that people always try to shake off. Pham Thien An's filmmaking style may be reminiscent of directors Apichatpong Weerasethakul or Bi Gan, but the depiction of existential themes in the work shows the maturity of a unique artist".
Inside the Golden Cocoon tells the story of Thien (Le Phong Vu) who returns the remains of his sister-in-law, Hanh, to her hometown after a motorbike accident. At the same time, he has to raise Dao (Nguyen Thinh), Hanh's son. After the funeral, Thien begins to recall memories of the past, where his youth and love quietly passed by.
In late May, the project won the Camera d'Or (Best First Film) award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film has also won many other international awards, such as the Roberto Rossellini Award for Best Film at the 2023 Pingyao International Film Festival and the Young Cinema Award at the 2023 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
