On November 2, Da Nang Hospital announced that doctors in the Stroke Department had just saved the life of a 10-year-old boy who had suffered a stroke with thrombolytic drugs.
Previously, patient NNH (10 years old, residing in Thanh Khe District, Da Nang City) was admitted to the emergency room at Da Nang Hospital in a state of drowsiness, paralysis on the right side of the body, unable to speak. Family members said that while playing with the child, the child complained of a headache, then his mouth became crooked, he became drowsy, and had difficulty speaking...
At the emergency room of Da Nang Hospital, doctors performed a CT scan and then urgently consulted with doctors from the Stroke Department. This is a very rare case of stroke in children. The patient was admitted to the hospital with weakness on the right side of his body, progressing to complete paralysis and impaired perception.
Fortunately, the family was able to take H. to Da Nang Hospital in the golden time. Doctors urgently consulted with leading stroke experts in Ho Chi Minh City that night to make an accurate diagnosis and decided to treat the patient with thrombolytic drugs in the hope of saving the patient's life.
Doctor checks NNH's motor function before discharge
Master-Doctor Pham Nhu Thong, Deputy Head of the Stroke Department, said that such a young patient with a stroke had never been seen before at Da Nang Hospital. Treatment would be very difficult and risky because there could be additional complications, leaving sequelae that could affect the future.
Fortunately, the patient responded to treatment and gradually improved after medication and active rehabilitation. Currently, the patient has been discharged and returned to school after nearly 1 month in the hospital.
Stroke can occur at any age.
Master-Doctor Pham Nhu Thong added that through the stroke case of NH, it can be seen that stroke can occur at any age. If it occurs in young people or children, the consequences can be very severe due to both physical and mental sequelae for the patient.
For children with cardiovascular abnormalities or blood clotting disorders, one of the possible causes of stroke needs more attention.
According to Dr. Thong, for stroke patients, the "golden time" determines the patient's life and recovery ability. Therefore, the patient's family needs to clearly understand the signs of BE FAST stroke to recognize early and provide timely emergency care to stroke patients.
Specifically, BE FAST includes B (BALANCE): loss of balance, headache, dizziness; E (EYESIGHT): partial or complete loss of vision, sudden blurred vision; F (FACE): naturally distorted face, one-sided smile, deviated philtrum; A (ARM): one arm or leg is weak, holding objects is not steady; S (SPEECH): loss of ability to speak, sudden difficulty speaking, slurred speech; T (TIME): when the above symptoms suddenly appear, quickly call 115 or take the patient to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency treatment for stroke.
